Letter to parents: Citywide Elementary Schools of Choice Application Process

The Buffalo Public Schools issued a statement letter to parents of school-age children in the city of Buffalo via postal mail about their Citywide Elementary Schools of Choice Application Process. This means any parent from anywhere in the city can request for their child(ren) to attend the school of their choice, well not quite.

There are two factors to be considered with this application:
1)criteria, which requires an entrance exam
and
2)lottery, where computerized selection determines student enrollment.

Additional application information can be found on the Buffalo Board of Education’s website (www.buffaloschools.org)

Then, there’s the question of neighborhood school of choice. The Buffalo Board of Education has considered closing of four public schools; thereby limiting parents and student choices.

"At least four schools will close,"
Superintendent Marion Cañedo said in a Buffalo News Article on Dec. 10th, 2003.
"We simply can't afford to operate as many buildings as we have in the past."

Draft: Includes a list of schools that are suspending services.
About a hundred parents, community residents, elected politicians and school offices filed into the auditorium at South Side Elementary School in South Buffalo this evening to discuss the matter of these school closings. The following four schools have been selected and will begin suspension of services as of July 1st, 2004

School #40
89 Clare Street

School #8 Follow Through Urban Learning Lab
167 E. Utica Street (at Masten)

School #86 St. Lawrence Academy
756 St. Lawrence Avenue

School #63 Campus North
120 Minnesota Avenue

Permanent closure is set for schools #40, #63 and #8 in September of 2004. School #86 is being considered as a swing school. Students will be arranged in various other school buildings for the 04/05 school years.

Two additional schools are scheduled to suspend services in January of 2005

School #12 Harriet Tubman Early Childhood Center
33 Ash Street

School #171 WEB Middle School
1409 E. Delavan

School #12 will be a permanent closure while the Board of Education will discuss future reuse for school #171.
