MEDIOCRE HETEROSEXUAL SEX Compass Performing Arts Center/Buffalo United Artists

Isn’t sex always about exploration and discovery?
Certainly, Madison Wetzell’s “Mediocre Heterosexual Sex” is.
It’s from Buffalo United Artists, with its decades of experiencing sexual and relationship issues, here spreading across the stage of what was TheatreLoft on Elmwood Avenue.
That’s now the Compass Performing Arts Center.
The key relationship involves Erin (Stefanie Warnick) and her dissolving pairing with Hannah (Katie Gaisser), with her stuff boxed and stacked in what was their living room, waiting to go.
Erin decides for the first time in her life to try sex with a guy and Aaron (Ben Caldwell) shows up after matching on Tinder.
He’s more than a little confused, although they get into acrobatic, nude sex.
Their maneuvering is watched over from across the stage by Violet (Blaise Mercedes) and Jeremy (Sean Patrick Ryan), with Jeremy also ready for non-vanilla sex.
In the BUA tradition, this isn’t some Hollywood RomCom set of relationships.
Everyone is trying to figure out their personal situation and it isn’t easy.
The cast does well, perhaps probing their psyches.
This is the first time the script has been staged and it’s obvious.
Director Mia LaMarco does well, as the show unfolds, although the basic script is a little rough and jagged.
What’s on stage is her vision of Wetzell’s vision on Gina Boccolucci’s set.
They need to get together and smooth it all out, perhaps by the time this production closes.
Still, “Mediocre Heterosexual Sex” is an opportunity to probe ourselves and how we look at those close to us and for some, there is certainly an opportunity to look further afield.
