Planning Underway for Lancaster’s 175th Anniversary

2008 marks the 175th Anniversary of the Town of Lancaster.



On Tuesday, March 25, 2008, residents volunteered to form a committee that will develop and coordinate events throughout the year.



Kimberly S. Chiarmonte, an Advertising Consultant with the Bee Group newspapers, offered to Chair the committee. Other volunteers include Supervisor Robert Giza, County Legislator Kathy Konst, Lancaster Historical Society President Karl Schurkus, Hull House President Gary Costello, Hull House representative Jeanette Dickinson, Lancaster Town Band member Kenneth E. Graber, Opera House member Linda Kozel, Youth Bureau Director John Trojanowski, Lancaster Bee Editor Lisa Johnson, Lancaster residents Bonnie Negron and Diane Savatteri, and Speakupwny writers Lee Chowaniec and Gary Howell.

Scheduled events include:

- 175th Anniversary celebration for the Towns of Clarence and Lancaster at Dunn Tire Raceway Park on Saturday May 10th. Admission is free for Clarence and Lancaster residents.

- Ice Cream Musicale at Hull House on Saturday and Sunday, June 7th and 8th. There will be live music, tours, a plant sale, period games, food vendors, and more.

Events being planned include:

- An Anniversary Concert by the Lancaster Town Band in August, possibly in their new band shell.

- The Lancaster Historical Society will sponsor a Civil War re-enactment at the Bowmansville Fire Hall highlighting Lancaster’s role in the Underground Railroad. They are also planning a fashion show featuring fashions from 1833 to 2008 along with their annual Tea party, cemetery tours, and other events.

- The Lancaster Ministerium is scheduling an Ecumenical Church service.

- Removal of a mysterious box that may have been placed behind the cornerstone in Lancaster Town Hall and replacing it with a contemporary time capsule.

- A Lancaster 175th Celebration Dinner at Salvatore’s Italian Gardens. The event is tentatively scheduled for Tuesday, September 17th. The contents of the mysterious box will be revealed at the dinner.

- A special Anniversary event at the Lancaster Opera House.

- The installation and unveiling of a commemorative bell in the clock tower at Westwood Park.

- A food drive to aid local food pantries

Other items include:

- A Lancaster Area Chamber of Commerce celebratory, 18 month, historical calendar, featuring works produced by local artist Karl Kipp.

- A plaque commemorating past, present, and future Town Supervisors
