Red Crown Imperials
Crown Imperial Fritillaria (Fritillaria imperialis)
These were ordered from www.brecks.com. Great service. 100% of them hatched.
These were planted in the fall. Didn't realize how fast these were growing already.
There were protected from the snow by using milk jugs staked down.
Wood chips were placed in the jugs to help insulate from the wind.

For you who don't know what these are:
Crown Imperials
Scientific Name
Fritillaria imperialis
If we are lucky they will flower April/May for about 2 to 3 weeks. They should grow to about 30" tall rather fast. They also have an offensive odor which should keep away some animals. Deer and rodents don't like the smell at all.
They originally came from Southern Turkey and India.
If these survive we should end up with red and yellow flowers.
Here is a sample I found on the brecks.com website
The bulbs were planted in the fall in spot that gets full sun. Just put them in a spot where the soil drains very well and plant then about 8" deep. A little sand or gravel wouldn't hurt if your soil doesn't drain well.

I can't believe how fast these are growing.
Two days later
Had 7 out of 8 spout... Had to see what was wrong with the one that didn't come up. Was planted upside down and the plant wasn't going to make it threw the soil. So it got replanted right side up. Look like it's starting to green up now.
You can see the size difference but I wonder if it will catch up now.
The entire plant was yellow when I flipped it up.
So far they haven't been fed anything but full sun.

I've been interested in Crown Imperials -- I actually saw some growing in a garden in Troy, NY when I lived in the Capital District and they are striking -- but I've been hesitant to buy and plant any because I've never seen them here in WNY. You'll have to keep us informed.
Are the milk jug protector and woodchip mulch your own ideas or do CIs require that kind of protection in Zone 5?
Followed the instructions on the bag. It said to cover them with mulch depending on the zone your in so Vicki used the chips that basically came in the bags. Vicki wanted them protected so she came up with the milk jug idea. She didn't want any animals digging them up.Originally Posted by Linda_D

These things are growing very fast
This one loses some of the direct sunlight because of where it is but it's growing very well but not as tall as the others
Now you can see the difference a couple more hours of sunshine does
Most of them are already starting to show thier flowers starting
They will end up hanging downwards

you can leave them outside through the winter?
She left them out but they are a pain in the ass.. one warm spell and they start to grow.... Frost does a number on them... Wind snapped one right a few days ago... I suppose you can dig them up and winter them over...
They are sort of goofy looking..
These are cool..
You can grow them in a bucket if you want..
