It was one month ago today our illustrious Governor announced the development of hand sanitizer made in New York prisons that was going to be sold and used to fight the spread of Coronavirus. No characteristic of the hand sanitizer made it a better deterrent to the spread of the virus. But, given the fact that it was being made by a captive labor force working for 62 cents per hour under threat of solitary confinement, it supposedly was cheaper than commercial brands that were being sold for more money. It’s been such a stunning success that, in the intervening 4 weeks, New York State has become the world leader in Coronavirus cases and deaths. Meanwhile, California, a state with twice the population of New York, has regained control of what appeared to be a runaway situation....gained control to the extent that today the death rate in New York is 14 times that in California, a state with twice our population. Of course, while our governor was fighting Coronavirus with press releases about hand sanitizer and idiot billionaires making ventilators in New York the governor of California was working cooperatively with the Trump administration to get whatever he needed to fight the virus, a matter he spoke about quite frankly on CNN recently. It’s the difference between fighting a pandemic with positive action and fighting it with press releases.
