Because the media is largely controlled by big business and conservatives?
I don't mean financially, although Air America is (say, will they duck repaying that $800,000 they stole from the Boys and Girls Clubs of New York?)
And I don't mean morally bankrupt. Every cowardly, hypocritical, lying liberal is morally bankrupt.
What I mean is, why aren't there more liberal talk shows.
With the country voting almost 50/50 Dem/Repub, why isn't talk radio 50/50 conservative/liberal?
All across the country when I ride I get Rush (of course). But there are also a whole host of others: Medved; Ingram;Hannity;Savage;O'Reilly.
I'm actually puzzled by this.
The missus came up with her own theory: liberals just don't tune in. The conservative shows attract an audience which, in turn, attracts advertisers. If libs don't show up, their networks won't get the advertising bucks.
This theory is attractive to me, as it paints libs as lazy (I know, a self-evident truth). But is it that simple?
I mean, most of the libs who post here are gubmint employees. So they have a vested interest in pushing big-gov, liberal agendas. But is it true that all those lumpkin union members are just too lazy to support their cause beyond pulling the levers they're told to once or twice a year?
So what does the rest of SU think? Why are there so few listeners to liberal talk radio?

I thought of that, but it doesn't hold up.Originally Posted by Stevenco

I added Turner in for good measure, although I think his influence is minor.
Now if these corporate masters cracked their whips (and if I accept your premise that all business is conservative) then why don't these networks outFox Fox?
Finally, Soros' personal wealth should allow him to fund any number of liberal networks if he wanted to.

The reason that talk radio has more conservative talk is conservatives do not like the slant the newspapers give.
If you want a right slant-radio
If you want a left slant-newspapers
Both sides have valid points and are strong opinions, just people know where to go to find information on the issues they feel strongly about and get that information in the slant they want.
Wow--how on topic is this?
Mark Helperin of ABC News is on O'Reilly right now saying that yes, "of course" the "old line" media (ABC/CBS/NBC and "60 Minutes") are left-biased and conservatives are right to believe that they won't get a fair shake from them.

Those liberal newspapers (The News among them) have been losing readership for decades. Then there was the scandal two and three years ago where many were caught lying to advertisers about their circulation.Originally Posted by leftWNYbecauseofBS
They are in a death spiral and cannot seem to break out of it.
Within the past three weeks, both the NY Times and NBC have announced staff cutbacks, IIRC.
But I'm still puzzled by the dearth of liberal talk radio.

Come on Wrona, why do you think there's so little lib radio?
this isn't a trap. I'm really curious not to hear more.

Hey now there's a name from the Dem glory days: Joseph Califano.
From the Carter Administration.
Who bemoaned that no one understood the problems of "those who govern."
didn't occur to him that he "served".

That's a variation of one of the responses I expected.
So you subscribe to the adage that people get more conservative as they age. (I agree with that; I was a lib when I was four and stupid)
This has got to be ominous for your side then.
There is a tidal wave of proto-geezers as the baby boomers age.
Are you just prepared to cede that entire cohort to the conservatives?

I'll tell you the reason Biker, but you won't want to hear the truth.
People are, by nature, "liberal" (meaning the "liberal", as we define it today).
Little white kids get along with little black kids; they don't see a difference.
Young people tend to have a Good Samaritan type attitude, wanting to help others because it's the right thing to do.
Tell a 5-year-old about the death penalty, and he'll probably be shocked.
Young children see police offers as heroes.
Then, people get older, and jaded, like yourself. They see a lot crap in life, and choose to use small examples of human misgivings as proof that "All _____ are bad" (fill in the blank, as you choose).
Sure, black people commit more crime, so they must all be bad.
Of course, most terrorism is committed by Arabs....
Yes, "helping others" (i.e. social services) cost us all money, and our taxes are already sky-high...
Sure, there are cold-blooded killers who don't deserve to live...
Sure, there are plenty of dirty cops out there....
You see, people don't start off life as jaded SOB's, they morph into them; through life's experiences most of the time.
So, for conservatives, in order to get the "I'm not the crazy one, am I?" feeling, they like to be amongst others who feel the same as they do. Kind of like a support group, so you can sit, listen to the radio, and say "dog-gone Bill in Montana feels just the way I do! I'm not crazy, after all ! "
You wanted it, you got it.
You're welcome.
Actually, I have to revisit this.Originally Posted by mikewrona

I'm thinking of setting up change collectors at Wilson Farms counters with that.
So you've got that off your chest.
So libs aren't successful in talk radio because they don't need the reinforcement.
Hmmmmmm. sounds lame

It looks like you and I just about agree. Congratulations!Originally Posted by biker
You see, when you were four, you were comfortable in your skin. Now, you're not. Doesn't necessarily mean you're always wrong, or a bad person. Simply means that you actually creep yourself out.
