I think it became a "soft" control board because Erkel balanced a couple of budgets. But this simply shows why Buffalo should have a hard control board, possibly for good. Also, the city government really doesn't give a sh*t about the city school budget because the BPS are financial wards of the state and have been for years.

Grump you are also correct, Buffalo spends so much money for people doing nothing, Like Traffic Police. The only money the city spends that does something is for Parking control.

Just raise taxes to cover the shortfall? Just like the towns do because they can't control labor costs. Why should people who live in Buffalo be any different than the people who live in the surrounding towns?

Well, at least in the suburbs we get something that resembles service and, for the most part, the schools are decent. I know the schools are starting to suffer in Cheek and some other inner ring 'burbs but none of them approaches the toilet that is the BPS. One of the reasons the BPS can't be reformed is that city tax payers have almost no skin in the game since the state pays 80% of the freight and consequently city tax payers are not paying for an overflowing toilet.

Cheektowaga is just comical at this point when you look at how much people pay for what they get.

Brown has already said they are not going to 'raise taxes' in Buffalo. The end around is they are going to raise the hell out of property assessments for 2018-19 fiscal year, which just happen to be after the next mayoral election. Homes that are currently assessed at less than $120k are being sold for north of $350k. It's going to be a shock to the system for sure.

Some people are really going to make out in this...and good for them. The ones who held on or got in early are going to have a good chance to cash out. But the folks who are trendy and overpaying to live near the 'rising' neighborhoods are going to be in for a bit of a wake up call. I just hope Buffalo spends the money well. Doubt it...but one can still hope.

Did Erkel say he wasn't raising taxes or wasn't raising the tax rate. Big difference in an era of rising assessments. If assessments are going up and rates remain the same then taxes collected will go up. If he means the tax levy will remain the same and assessments go up then rates should fall. I doubt he knows the difference. In Amherst, Susan Grelick was notorious for playing the "tax rate is staying the same" card while increasing assessments drove taxes collected higher year after year. Eventually, enough tax payers saw through the word game that it led to her defeat and the disastrous election of Satish Mohan.

    Pulled from here - http://buffalonews.com/2016/05/01/bu...he-city-grows/

“We have long had a comprehensive plan to make the city more attractive to residential and commercial investment, which involved cutting the tax rate and freezing taxes,” Brown said. “In 2018, with the revaluation process, we anticipate there will be a modest tax increase.”

Sounds like the plan is to hold the tax rate but increase tax revenue by increasing assessments. I think a lot of people are going to have issue with their assessments...and even try to fight it...but the RE data is going to support the new assessments.

I think some on the school board are seeing the writing on the wall and in turn trying to build up charters. After all, if parents are all of a sudden looking at property taxes that are 75% of what you would pay in Amherst compared to 40% or even 50%....some choices are going to be forced. For $10k a year you can have Maple East (10/10), Transit Middle (9/10) and Williamsville East (8/10) locked in simply by your address or you can pay $7.5k and be assigned to School 30 (2/10), School 30 (2/10) and Lafayette High School (2/10) with the hopes of landing in a Charter or having enough money to do private/catholic via savings for paying less in taxes.

I get the lifestyle is night and day living in these places if you're active. But honestly, if you have kids, you're not really spending time on the EV strip with friends.

You're right the lifestyle is night and day. In Amherst your chances of being murdered on the street are virtually nil while Buffalo is the murder capital on New York State. And you don't have to live in the toilet to use it. There's nothing Buffalo offers that can't be readily accessed from Amherst and then you go home and avoid the killing zone. If the current Buffalo school board gets involved in charter schools they won't be worth sh*t just like the BPS.

You know this is not the truth. There are several parts of Amherst that don't even come close to being as safe as some parts of Buffalo. The EV ≠ The East Side. Also EV > Sweethome et al.

Leftie, obviously I disagree with you and the murder statistics speak for themselves as does just about evert meaningful crime statistic kept by any law enforcement agency.
