No. This is the crisis of my lifetime. Even before the pandemic hit, I realized that we were in a revolutionary moment where what would be impossible or even inconceivable in normal times had become not only possible, but probably absolutely necessary. And then came COVID-19, which has totally disrupted people’s lives and required very different behavior. It is an unprecedented event that probably has never occurred in this combination.--- George Soros, May 11, 2020

Well, that is a weakness that I hope will not last very long. Donald Trump would like to be a dictator. But he cannot be one because there is a constitution in the United States that people still respect. And it will prevent him from doing certain things. That does not mean that he will not try, because he is literally fighting for his life. I will also say that I have put my faith in Trump to destroy himself, and he has exceeded my wildest expectations.--- George Soros, May 11, 2020

Several police officers have been shot / run over and killed, suffered hundreds of injuries from thrown rocks, bottles, provoked and spat on, etc. Has anyone taken a knee for them; for the injured peaceful supporters attending the protests?

Businesses and homes vandalized and looted by rioters – covered by personal insurance? Who pays the billions in damages?

Who is really Antifa, organizes the activities and pays for the operation and material costs?

Anarchy in the streets and our leaders have been inept in controlling it, but oh so good in blaming each other for cause and for lack of resolve. We are so fortunate to have Cuomo and de Blasio at the helm in our state (sarcasm!).

The new norm? A police officer committed murder. Three others were complicit in the act. They should be punished accordingly, not all of America.

    We are so screwed!

I have heard several sources on radio say that most policies do not cover loss due to civil unrest, yet, sources from a simple Google search suggest the contrary.

    Best check your individual policy.

Booming Atlanta relies on hotel clerks, nannies, gardeners, house cleaners, car washers, Uber drivers, janitors who clean fancy gyms and couriers who deliver from trendy restaurants. Jobs like these are what tend to be available now to workers without a college degree who 50 years ago could have found middle-class work in factories and offices.

Such low-wage jobs in cities are disproportionately held by minority workers. And these are the people hit hardest by job losses this spring, during a public health and economic crisis that has highlighted urban inequality. While the virus itself has preyed on poor African-Americans who could not work from home, the public-health prescription for it — people must stay apart — has preyed on service-sector employment.

And yet Walmart, the successful retail corporation that has been recognized / praised for its business acumen was a business that intimidated / encouraged manufacturers supplying their stores in the 90’s to seek countries with cheap labor to manufacture goods to lower their costs. Lower manufacturing costs that in turn lowers Walmart’s cost and makes them more competitive and enriched, goes unscathed.

How many manufacturing jobs were lost in the process? How many more manufacturing jobs were lost when competing companies resorted to same tactics? Are we looking under the right rocks?

    What could possibly go wrong?

The Pentagon has told Washington D.C.'s National Guard and guardsmen from other states who have are in the nation’s capital not to use guns or ammunition.

The order came from Defense Secretary Mark Esper and made without consulting the White House, The Washington Post reported, and it's seen as a sign of de-escalation of the federal response to protests that sprung up in the wake of George Floyd's death.

The nation’s capital is bracing for what could be its largest protest yet on Saturday since the death of George Floyd, expanding a massive fenced perimeter around the White House, even as they send home hundreds of active-duty troops who were stationed outside the city.

It was not clear how many would show up to Saturday’s demonstrations but #1MillionDCSaturday was trending on Twitter in a call for 1 million people to march on the capital in protest of police brutality.

At the same time, Mayor Muriel Bowser wants all non-D.C.troops out of the city. All 900 active duty military police brought to bases around Washington, D.C., following the civil unrest after Floyd’s death are heading home, the Department of Defense said Friday.

Defense Director Esper said the nationwide protests -- which have, in some cases, turned violent and led to property damage and looting -- did not warrant the deployment of active-duty military.

"The option to use active-duty forces in a law enforcement role should only be used as a matter of last resort and only in the most urgent and dire situations," Esper said Wednesday. "We are not in one of those situations now. I do not support invoking the Insurrection Act."

Meanwhile, Bowser fought the president on the deployment of National Guard troops from different states to the city. She said she only requested the 100 D.C. National Guard troops to line the perimeter of the White House, in a limited role and unarmed.

When the sun sets tomorrow, June 6, the 76th anniversary of the D-Day sacrifices, will Constitutional America be in the hands of history Lee?

Equally troubling, let me get this straight: I can't go to church for "normal" services because of COVID concerns, but attendance at a mass gathering protest is acceptable and no politics here?

Rioters deface monument honoring all-black regiment of Union Civil War soldiers

    by Peter Heck · Jun 6th, 2020 5:14 pm

Last Updated Jun 6th, 2020 at 5:30 pm

Exactly 123 years to the day that it was dedicated, the Shaw Memorial, a monument honoring the first all-volunteer black regiment of the Union Army in the Civil War, was defaced by rioters demanding justice for African-Americans.

On May 31, 1897, the monument was erected on Boston Commons to honor the 54th Massachusetts Regiment of Colonel Robert Gould Shaw, who bravely attacked Confederate forces at Fort Wagner.

One of the soldiers, Sgt. William Harvey Carney carried the American flag throughout the battle, never dropping it despite being shot 7 times. Carney was the first black American to win the Congressional Medal of Honor for action.

Liz Vizza, the executive director overseeing the public garden where the monument is located, was shocked that a memorial to black soldiers was defaced by rioters. She noted that the black men who fought in the 54th Massachusetts Regiment were not only risking death, but also the potential of being enslaved if they had been captured.

"This monument is considered one of the nation's greatest pieces of public art and the greatest piece to come out of the Civil War," [Vizza] told WBUR-FM.

The backside of the monument honoring Carney and the 270 men who lost their lives in the battle is now covered with profane graffiti reading "ACAB" (All Cops Are B*stards), "F*** 12" (police), "BLM," "No Justice, No Peace," and "Police are Pigs."

The exploits of the 54th Massachusetts Regiment were depicted in the 1989 Hollywood epic, "Glory."

Confused, scared, angry or just plain overwhelmed? Yeah, me too.

The following excerpt appeared in today’s Washington Post:

Former president Barack Obama and former first lady Michelle Obama addressed the unrest sparked by the death of George Floyd and the coronavirus pandemic in their commencement speeches to the Class of 2020 on Sunday, telling graduates that they, too, are anxious about the events that have unfolded in recent months.
“It’s fair to say that your generation is graduating into a world that faces more profound challenges than any generation in decades,” Barack Obama said. “It can feel like everything’s up for grabs right now.”

Both the pandemic and the killing of Floyd and other African Americans have turned a spotlight on economic inequality, lack of access to health care, bigotry and political dysfunction, the former president said.

Demonstrations against systemic racism and police brutality are not “simply a reaction to those particular tragedies, as heartbreaking as they are,” he said. “They speak to decades’ worth of anguish and frustration over unequal treatment and a failure to reform police practices and the broader criminal justice system.”

In separate remarks, Michelle Obama also took a serious tone, reassuring graduates that they are not alone if they feel confused, scared, angry or “just plain overwhelmed.”

“I am feeling all of that, too,” she said.

    Confused / Angry

Confused and angered by being stereotyped as inherently or unconsciously racist because I am white.

Confused in being locked down by a pontificating Governor for 12 weeks, denied visiting a dentist, ophthalmologist, etc., forced to wear a mask and to practice social distancing (all under threat of penalty), and then watching Cuomo and de Blasio turn a blind eye to the protesters roaming the streets in packs and where many were unmasked and certainly not practicing social distancing.

    Scared

Scared and angered that municipalities are considering disbanding or defunding police forces – compromising the number one function of a government, namely, to protect its citizens against harm.

Are there bad cops? Indeed, as in every walk of life. Unfortunately, they are being protected by unions and government agencies. Reform is warranted. Sad that the country should become a firestorm and further divided for political gain.

    This country is so screwed!

Lee, his economic remarks notwithstand, Trump, since the June 1 Esper comments and the subsequent Presidential compliance, has been very quiet. No tweets, no bloviating; apparently, just a rather quiet weekend hunkered down in the White House, while its adjacent street is renamed with painted yellow words by seemingly victorious protesters.

The question: "Is the Presidential timidity indicative of a gathering storm, or is it the "melancholy tranquility" suggested in Greek Tragedy?

Nah, these community revolutionary leaders most probably do not want to defund the police. Such a threat or consideration seems at least to me, to be almost a heavy-handed public-broadcast negotiation tactic.

Rather, would you not agree that these municipal leaders seek to transform the police into an exclusive enforcement arm of their revolutionary ideas and programs.

In light of the recent, rather bi-polar enforcement of public gathering restrictions, one may legitimately consider the possibility that a "new police force" will emerge after an intense engagement of what may politely be termed "re-training in applied community awareness" or some crap like that. (I prefer indoctrination in the revolution's philosophy.)

Subsequently, perhaps the re-educated police officer in enforcement matters, will be committed to a principled discernment between circumstances which urgently threaten the public condition and require police enforcement, and those defiant circumstances which are motivated by a cause perceived as so noble, so as to permit disobedience of the law, because the positive impact of the defiant mission outweighs the public safety concerns, and is entirely justified?

    Regarding your comment...

As am I Lee, because perhaps the indoctrination above-referred may extend to all humans holding "White Privilege?"

Maybe a "voluntary" community get-together for all of us to express our shame; to explore, study, and comprehend "The New Normal," and then swear to unquestionably live and abide by the rules of "The New Normal?"

I ask what does the reader think of a society that would permit the existence of those unrepentant white-privileged bigots who do not seek such enlightened remedy?

Should those dysfunctional members of the community be free to continue in their life of sin, while still maintaining the privileges of owning private property, driving a car, owning a dog, using a public sidewalk, holding and using a credit card, enjoy public utilities, and of course, maintaining their sinful bodies with medical care?

Ah, the potential wonders of "The New Normal?"

Fox News is reporting that today, President Trump will hold a "Law Enforcement Round Table," which will be closed to the press.

Is he attempting to fill the void created by a treasonous military which revolted against him?

NYS Legislature – asleep at the wheel

President Trump has been labeled as the ‘Man who would be King’. Yet New York has a Governor who rules in exact manner but is loved and fawned over by a biased liberal media and gets a pass.

After reading daily liberal reports (95%) in the liberal Buffalo News, it was refreshing to read News Albany Bureau Chief Tom Precious o Cuomo’s unbridled reign and our feckless State Legislature.

    https://buffalonews.com/2020/06/08/w...emergency-end/

Now, as he also decides what sectors and functions of society can reopen, a question is increasingly being asked: When does the state of emergency he declared on March 7 come to an end?

It’s time for the Legislature to start acting again like a separate branch of government.

Lawmakers reconvened two weeks ago to take up a number of Covid-related bills that they said were urgently needed, from anti-price gouging steps to homeowner and renter protections to disaster loan efforts. By Friday, however, lawmakers still had not sent 31 of those bills to Cuomo, a signal that he was not ready to act on them yet and they were not willing to try to force his hand to sign or veto them.

The governor has been a strong user of executive orders. Since taking office in 2011, he has issued 338.

Since March 7, Cuomo has issued 37 executive orders pertaining to Covid-19, many of them with multiple provisions affecting vast sectors of society and the economy. He has used the orders to shut down businesses, close schools and redirect health care resources. The 338 total executive orders by Cuomo is, historically speaking, a lot. Gov. Nelson Rockefeller, between 1960 and 1973, issued 78 such orders. Gov. Huge Carey issued 122. Gov. Mario Cuomo, the governor’s father, issued 189 over his 12 years in office.

If there would be a significant uptick in the virus, it will be interesting to hear who Cuomo blames for the virus – the roaming band of protesters / rioters or those returning to church, salons, shopping, etc. Mr. Cuomo is so good at the blame game.

And then, there is New York City Mayor de Blasio. Police suck! Citizens stay home. Protesters and looters, welcome to my streets.

    We are so screwed!

Defund or abolish police forces? Seriously? The 'new norm', really?

Some police can be arrogant pricks and should be taken off the streets, but I want to see the good guys remain on the streets protecting my ass!

For many years I had to visit corporate headquarters in Minneapolis several times a year. Loved visiting there in all that time. What the hell has happened to the twin cities?
