Free SUNY college tuition? That raises lots of questions

It most certainly does raise questions.

My first question would be now does a person get to be governor and think you can give something away for free when other people are footing the bill.

Free SUNY college tuition? That raises lots of questions

Gov. Andrew M. Cuomo wants to entice more New Yorkers into earning a college degree with an offer of free tuition at the state’s public colleges and universities. It’s easy to understand free, especially when college costs prompt night sweats for parents of college-age students.

“I think all of us in the private sector applaud the governor for trying to find a way to get more students into college and on to a degree,” said Gary A. Olson, president of Daemen College in Amherst, one of 11 private non-profit colleges and universities in Western New York. “I’m sure that all the intentions are good. But what I’m seeing and he may not be seeing is the unintended consequences.”
Are "non-profit colleges and universities" considered the "private sector"?

I don't really consider any non profit true private sector.

Olson said the governor’s plan as it now stands would create havoc in the state’s higher education landscape, potentially steering tens of thousands of students from private colleges and universities onto SUNY campuses that won’t have the capacity to handle the influx.

“They would be completely overwhelmed,” he said.
Would it not be worded better if he just said "It will screw us"

Well, presumably, there would still be admissions criteria people would have to meet. Who knows? If demand for SUNY seats increases, their admission standards might rise leaving still better students for the private colleges to pick from. The goal of the NYC Democrats for years has been to make SUNY/CUNY free for everyone. Their goal is to create a permanent class of "students" who never graduate but instead constitute another class of dependents who vote Democrat who are provided lifetime sustenance in return for their vote. It's worked marvels for the Democrats in the cities with welfare. And this is something that millenials would flock to. For most of them their only goal in life is to be a cabbie for Uber or pump coffee for Starbucks. The thought of staying in college forever is heaven on earth for them.

Cuomo continues on his quest to give this state away ..courtesy of its' taxpayers. His liberal ideas will eventually bankrupt this state as thousands of hard working taxpayers flee as they see their tax dollars spent going to support those who will flock here to get their handouts. ENOUGH IS ENOUGH!

This how Democrats and liberals screw things up, which at this point really doesn't matter because in the end you are just left with the needy in this state and the productive leave. NY does not have a good economy and continues to lose population. Tax receipts have gone down, particularly from the wealthy which their top one percent pays 40% of the taxes here. You can imagine even more flight from NY when the economy tanks and NYer's are on the line for generous pension obligations which have bankrupted so many municipalities. Just wait!

Why do we think they continue to kick the can down the road with some of the issues we see? IE: pension cost, health care cost, etc

Because that's how they get votes.
