    The Retsof Mine Collapse

On March 12, 1994 the Retsof Salt Mine, which had been in operation for over 100 years and was the largest salt mine in North America, collapsed. One of the major environmental impacts of the collapse is that the mine filled up with ground water. The combination of salt and water created a brine mixture, which eventually traveled up through shale deposits above the collapsed mine and settled in the lower aquafer, contaminating local water supplies. By the close of 1994 an estimated 20 wells were classified by the County as being dried up or completely unusable. This number continued to rise as the mine continued to flood, and additional well testing was conducted. The mine officially closed a year later.

Did find this. Don't know if it's related.
    NY

Around 1890 a place called Little Italy came into being near Griegsville, New York. Most of the residents of Little Italy were immigrants who came to work in the nearby salt mine, and many were Italian. These individuals constructed new lives above and below ground. The particular geology of the land around Retsof contributed salt and landscape—the motivation and backdrop for the town. The company provided the housing structures and the residents of the community executed the remainder of the construction of Little Italy.

Another story my grandfather would repeat a lot is when his father spanked his ass pretty bad.

When is was a kid they would swim in a pond near the salt mine. One day as a "joke" he hid under the dock or log and his friends thought he was drowning. They went to get some adults and when they got there he was out of the water. Apparently his father didn't think it was funny.

I wonder if this was the pond he was talking about

The current look of the Little Italy reservoir. This reservoir provided water for Little Italy and also served as a setting for recreation. Children swam and skated in the water.

I don't know what year this one was taken.

He's either still in Retsof NY or already in Buffalo at this time. My great grand parents purchased the Lovejoy restaurant/tavern 1921.

And you all see that snap tool box behind them?

It's sitting in my garage with most of his tools....

About 1982 I needed a screw driver when I opened my business...

He gave me one out of that tool box. I use it almost every day.

    Found another one.

    Great Great grandfather

And I see mention of the town in Italy they migrated from.

"Nicola Bucci was actually born in New York City, yet lived most of his childhood in Campachiaro. He returned to America at age 11. After his marriage to Nicolina Sorro a few years later, they moved to Little Italy after hearing from other families about the opportunities."

    Campochiaro

I don't know why people would want to leave a town like that.

CAMPOCHIARO - MOLISE - VIAGGIA CON WALLACE

I wonder if they have records in that town to see exactly where he lived.

I know what you mean. My grandmother was a British Home Child sent toCanada from England by the Bernardo Home's organization. I retyped the letter that I found that she wrote to the Barnardo Homes magazine, "UPS AND DOWNS" in 1904. She was in Petersboro. This was 3 years after she was sent to Canada. My mom was already gone when I learned about this. I don't know if my grandmother ever talked about it with her kids as my mom was her last living child..

This is from May 4, 1899 when she and her sister and 3 brothers were brought to the Barnardo Stepney Causeway home in London, England. She is the one sitting on the floor. In 1901, she was the only sibling shipped to Canada.

Thirteen years ago, i wrote the Barnardo Homes to research my grandmother. i paid my 100 pounds and received this letter, a couple pictures and some other information.

Have you contacted churches in the town they were from? For my dad's mother's side, I got records from their church in Clausen, Germany on pdf. My 6th great-grandfather is probably the earliest I have. Some of the relatives notes show much land they had what they did for a living. Of course, I had to use google translate to get the info. My dad's father's side, I've been getting some information from a distant, distant cousin in Germany. The issue with that is, he is not computer literate. So his letters are handwritten and hard to translate

    Very cool.

I'm took some photo's of photos with my cell but I need to do that again. Now I think some of the photos in my grand mothers wedding photo book might be in "little italy" retsof. At least one of the photos I saw.

If it is I'll send it over to who ever worked on a webpage about that area near the salt mine in retsof. I think the one photo of my grandfather I posted in post #51 might be from there also.

Report here how you make out with that. You should also move this thread to the Genealogy in WNY thread. https://www.speakupwny.com/forums/sh...neology-in-WNY
