Do you consider this a natural disaster?

Do you consider this snow storm on the same level of a Fema natural disaster as an earthquake or huricane?

I know there's cleanup now but it's not like 1000 homes were washed away or were crushed.

We didn't have electricity for a week in some cases and got a lot of trees pruned very badly. I was here thinking about Katrina where nieghborhoods were washed away or when an earthquake destroys home after home.

I don't think this is a natural disaster on par with Katrina -- nowhere near. And I'd be surprised if people are reimbursed for much by FEMA, unless they pay to replace trees or loss of business due to loss of power.

I hope the local governments can get reimbursed, though, because they are going to incur huge recovery costs -- and, of course, that will cost all of us already over-burdened taxpayers. I think it's going to take weeks and weeks to get this cleaned up.

As far as storms go I would say, no, it is not. It is more like an inconvenience then anything else. Sure you may not have had power for a few days but so what. There are places and people who have never had power and they do just fine.
WNYers' are trying to tarnish their rep as a city of good neighbors. The whining and complaining over FEMA is just plan BS and shows just how little we know about the actual function of FEMA.
For those who are whining; how about going out and doing for yourself and your neighbors and stop waiting around for the government to pick you up when your down. This of course does not include those who cannot do for themselves. Their neighbors who can, should be helping them.
    Do it yourself.
The questions asked by the media, to the FEMA director where absolutely pathetic. Saying such things as, FEMA dropped the ball. What a bunch of ignorant reporters in WNY.
They'll ask tough questions and pressure FEMA but ignore the politicians of WNY, NYS and all their shady deals. Never to pressure for answers and accept what they are told by our local and state politicians.
Media Hacks! All of them in WNY. Even ones that I had hoped would be real investigative reporters. They are not and may never be such reporters. Not here in WNY.

This is no Katrina, nor an earthquake. A hardship and inconvenience, yes. There are some serious issues, such as danger from downed power lines and falling tree limbs. But our homes were not washed away. Buildings did not collapse. As bad as it seems, it is not the worst thing that could have happened.

I don't think this was a natural disaster, just a royal pain in the butt. I never would of thought of FEMA helping us but it would be great if they can pass a few bucks to the governments to help with the clean up. I have a few trees that need some professional pruning and one toppled over at its base. Some friends will be coming over to help me and we will be cutting it up for campfire wood. Thank God for my friends because my neighbors are... well... not extremely helpful.

This is what truly pisses me off. We as a culture do not want to know our neighbors. It is scary for most people and for others they simply do not care to make themselves known.
This is where the Government steps in. They have become and are now seen as the friendly neighbor. The neighbor with the helping hand!

Your thoughts are very nice compared to my thoughts on this subject. I listen to WGRZ News Channel Two and how they went on to say the people of Buffalo were helping each other out in this time of need and how great we all are here. I am thinking to myself, Am I in the right State...... I mean, I think there were probably more people who did not help each other even though they had the means to help then there were people who actually did help each other....

My mother's friend was telling us that her basement was starting to get water so she asked her neighbor, who is a volunteer fire fighter, if she could plug the sump pump into the generator. The neighbor replied NO! I would be peo'd at that.

One of my neighbors heard through another neighbor, THAT I CALLED TO SEE HOW THINGS WERE AT THEIR HOUSE, I was getting water in my basement. So the neighbor runs a 200 foot extensiuon cord from his generator so I could plug in the sump pump for a bit. A short time later the SOB knocks on the door after removing the cords to let me know that he disconnected the cord in fear of damaging his generator do to the length and load of the power cord..... Before I could explain to him that the generator has a circuit breaker and before any damage would result it would cut out he was gone.....
One hand it was nice he did come over but then on the other hand WTF!

That was a determaning factor in me getting my own friggin generator. So now on my side of the street just in the short area, one house has a generator, my next door neighbor does not have one, I have one now, my other next door neighbor does not have one but is getting one, the next door neighbor to him has one. Across the street there are two houses diagnally from my house who have one. We could power half the friggin street for pete sake but hell damn you if you dare plug into one of my spare recepticles on the generator to save your basement from total flood out.

My neighbor who I did not call to see how things were seen me shoveling the damn driveway by hand. He gets his 8 horse power snowthrower out and does his driveway in like ten minutes and then goes back inside............ We had an unusual amount of snow and the end of the drive was nicely plowed in by the street plows. I do not think it would have hurt him to come over and do the drive this one time...... I would have given gasoline for the machine........ People are a piece of work these days.........

I could be nice and I could not be nice but when I am not nice I let you know that I am not being nice and this might be the reason why for not being so nice. I keep slight mental score cards.

Actually, some buildings -- or at least parts of them -- did collapse. They showed several on Sunday from the camera on the helicopter that was flying over the area.

It was an odd ball. The wires would have gave way no matter what.
I am shocked at the fact that Sqauw Island's main pumping station does not have a power backup facility....... That is mind blowing...... All utilities need to be self sufficiant in the time of crisis............

What it goes to show you is that deregulating the electric grid was a dumb, stupid, idiotic, retarded, shallow, narrow-minded, inept, silly, and dangerous idea.

I do not believe this is as much of a disaster as an earthquake or hurricane. When I lived in Syracuse, we had two major ice storms, neither of which required FEMA assistance, and both of which were nearly as destructive as this storm. Yes, food spoiled, yes, property was damaged, but I do not believe this warrants a handout from the feds.

This is just my $0.02, take it for what it's worth.

FEMA is just the bank thats going to pay for the municipalities to clean up, so from that aspect yes, it has to be or the bill comes due.

That being said, I don't see it as dramatically as many do. there were loses, and hardship, no doubt, but not as dramatic as it seems the pols are trying to make it out as
