    Cutting Defense Spending?

Defense Secretary Robert Gates: "When It Comes To The Deficit, The Department Of Defense Is Not The Problem"

We could cut our defense spending in half, and still be spending double of what any other nation spends.

And the "DoD" line item doesn't even include all the miscellanea of defense spending, like DHS and the TSA.

We should get the hell out of Iraq. That would save a bundle. Why after literally centuries of failed foreign occupation should be in Afghanistan is beyond me.

It's all about who gets what money in the end. We give these countries millions and millions only to find out that the enemy...Iran, gives money as well.

oh that's right we are out of Iraq ...sarcastic face.

Name TWO countries that the US/UN has ever been involved in that we've left??

Sorry, but military spending is less than 25% of the whole budget....

Even if eliminated it all, let ALL the Bush tax cuts expire, cut all off of the spending under Bush... we'd still have a deficit over $300 BILLION A YEAR...

    Keep trying.

And yes I do agree we can cut billions from the DOD budget, mostly the BS weapons we'll never use and the 100's of 1000's of troops stationed overseas.

Your inability to see the big picture is astounding.....

Say the US were to cut defense spending in half. Just where do you make those cuts?

The US armed forces has about 60M that are fit for duty. If you cut half of the defense budget...a safe projection would be 25% of those people would need to find a new career. So how do you employ 15M people, some of who have a very limited skill set?

Added to this, the US military spending is so high because the rest of the world does not spend as much. As you pointed out, even if the DOD were to cut their budget in half, it would still be spending double what other nations do. So are you suggesting that that 50% of the security that the US armed forces provides is unnecessary?

Tell us what you see happening if the US were to cut 50% from the DOD budget. I am really curious to see what you think would happen.

I am not saying defense level spending should not be curbed, capped or cut...I am just curious to hear the next 8 words after your first 8 in 'We could cut our defense spending in half.' I would love the 8 after that as well.

Guess some people do not like to look at the facts...

Even funnier is they can not even want to try and comprehend why we are still there or what would happen if we were to leave.

Interesting how the one area that the Constitution mandates be done, Defense, is what is suggested be cut. Not any of the social welfare feel good programs.

You know what though. I agree with pulling out of countries around the world. All of those troops should then be placed along out Sourthern border to stop the invasion.

It's not the only place suggested for cuts. They're also looking at everything from social security, farm subsidies, child tax credits, mortgage tax credits, malpractice suits, gasoline tax, and a myriad of other cuts.

60M? Sixty Million? The U.S. doesn't have a 60 million man army. Even with the civilian workforce the total strength is around 3 million.

You are not usually this loose with facts Lefty!

HA. So my bad. I read the wrong stats and was not thinking. The 60m is men/women who would be fit enough to serve.

A big brain fart on my end. Thanks for the correction.
