Citi bank refuses to cancel my credit card... now what?

Last year i had to take out a LOC with my local bank to pay off some crap.... Anyways, a stipulation was i had to get my availble credit down. At the time I had over $80,000 in available credit.

So, my bank drew up cancellation letters for a couple of my cards and joint cards I had with my now deceased father and sent them out...

Well 6 months later, citi sends me a new card. call em up, told them to cancel the card. They said it was then cancelled.

This morning I check my mail and I get a letter about the fee is increasing for credit protection on this one card that I thought was cancelled.

So here we go again, attempting to cancel the card...

I ALWAYS demand to see in writing when I cancel something so that I know.

Also, you can check your credit report once yearly for free:

    https://www.annualcreditreport.com/cra/index.jsp

They'll let you know what's open/closed/etc and a number to contact if you want to close it.

I don't really understand how they can refuse to cancel your credit card?

Is the credit protection service actually through your card issuer, or is it a 3rd party who may not have updated their records?

    That's what I was thinking.
Also, check your credit report, it should tell you which accounts are open and which are closed.

The way this works is, they tell you they closed it, but in reality left it open.

I posted this while I was on hold this am... It turns out they actually DID cancel my orignal account but because they thought I was a sucker they just reissued me a new card with the same limits and apr... hopefully there wont be a round 4.

They cannot report false information to the credit reporting companies. If the account is closed on your credit report, then the account is closed.

Are you sure the bank actually submitted the form for that card?

Maybe they never sent it, or maybe there was something wrong with the form, so your credit card bank couldn't processes it.

are you sure its really not canceled? You might still just be in another database that sends out form letters
