Which school?
A important reminder. Tomorrow your vote on a capital school project is needed. 29.5 million is about to be spent by the school superintendent. On a lot of unnecessary items. The super says no tax increase. He does not seem to realize all the money he gets is from the taxpayers. Saying the state will pick up the tab is a real gamble. The state is broke. If passed the amherst taxpayer will be the only one paying when the state backs out. Don't be fooled by these school superintendents, vote NO now and send him and the school board a message, and that is we are taxed way too much. Let your friends and family know to vote no, and you can stop this unnecessary spending of your money. Good luck.
Actually the majority of new funds for this project are federal stimulus money. If we don't take it, someone else will. None of these funds are coming from NYS. The repairs are necessary and part of long term planning, including paying down a portion of the current debt. And yes, long term planning allowed no tax increase. Voting no will not help any of us, but will hurt our schools. Vote Yes.
classic distortion from add it up: only about 4 million is coming from federal stimulus money but the school system has not been pre-approved for the project so it could come back to the town taxpayers regardless.
10 million of it is currently going to be borrowed via bonds. The remaining balance as stated in the News "would come from existing capital reserves, remaining New York State EXCEL aid ." There is no EXCEL aid left in the state, which means that amount will have to be paid for by town taxpayers as well.
Which means tax increases in the coming years. The reason there is "no tax increase this year" is because School system will not begin paying it off until NEXT year's budget. And that they have taken into account the increase in assessments to cover the costs already. So yes, there has already been a tax increase (in the form of assessment) together with future tax increases.
classic bait-n-switch. classic deflection by add it up.
vote no for the obvious reasons.
That being said, because people are often "scared" into voting for this stupid and overbloated budgets, it probably will pass at the cost of us all.

School Districts in general are in their own worlds.
Hate has it right. The State is broke; if this passes we will be paying the full ticket price (minus 4 milliion from the feds).
Prediction is.... passes 2 to 1. 644 yes 322 no PATHETIC
[QUOTEIf we don't take it, someone else will.) This is the kind of thinking that has brought our country and state to its knees. Vote no and try and break this foolish thinking.
When will we hear the outcome? I live out of state and I am curious to find out.
the outcome will be after 9pm. should be posted by 10. it has not been publicized much. the super hopes to let it pass under the radar.the governor has already said no to these funds. if passed the williamsville taxpayer will pick up the largest share. Like 200 dollars extra starting in 2010. Vote no.
We cannot give up so easily. It may be right now 50-50. Get your friends and family out to vote no. this is the only way to stop these horrible tax increases. Otherwise these school districts will milk you dry. All for the kids, BS, it is for administrators. Stop it tonight.
Let me guess, none of you have kids in this school district or are retired after the school district educated your kids. Well, sorry, I voted yes because it affects my kids and is not wasted money contrary to those who feel education is not worth our investment.
Here is the actual breakdown:
PROJECT FUNDING PLAN
Federal Stimulus Funds .................................................. .................................................. ............. $ 4,400,000
Federal money will be used to renovate outdated high school science classrooms and labs, creating 21st century learning centers for students. Federal money will be channeled into local economy, creating jobs.
Budgetary Appropriations .................................................. .................................................. ........ $ 3,643,634
Judicious allocation of certain existing budget appropriations to help pay for the capital project work.
Capital Reserve Funds .................................................. .................................................. ............... $11,862,679
The community voted in 2007 to establish a Capital Reserve account for the express purpose of funding major construction projects to improve school facilities and preserve its long-term investment in its schools.
EXCELAid.......................................... .................................................. .............................................$ 275,520
Remaining New York State EXCEL aid received in 2006-07 will be directed to help pay for the instructional program improvements addressed in the capital project.
New Debt* .................................................. .................................................. ................................. $9,376,667
District’s long-standing level debt service plan requires that any new debt match the pay-off of old debt. The new debt amount will be absorbed into the existing debt service budget without increasing the local tax levy.
Total: .................................................. .................................................. .................................................. ........... $29,558,500
So again, long term planning allows no increase in taxes.
add it up - if your theory on new debt/old debt is correct then there should never be a tax increase. But we both know that is not correct because the math doesn't work because you fail to add in interest and terms of each and every bond. Each capital expenditure is different and under different terms. So you cannot easily swap old debt with new debt as you claim.
To avoid tax increases based solely on this capital improvement project, the school board will transfer funds from one line to another. For example, they will transfer 1 million from critical school program budget lines to cover these expenditures and then at year end, they will say that the tax increase is needed for these crticial programs. And no one ever question it out of fear.
Again, classic bait-n-switch.
Moreover, given the increased assessments (i.e. a new tax) this year, according to your logic, there should be a LARGE surplus because they don't take on any additional debt and thus we should be receiving a tax cut in the school budget. but we both know that is not correct either.
In other words, our school district is the most efficient school district in the state. And we both know that is incorrect.
Throwing (lots of) money at an issue does not equate to improve education opportunities. Just look at the City of Buffalo who spends more per child than most. And yes, I have three children in the school district and I am voting no.
simply to question and challenge the overbloated school budget should happen to educate the board that just adding more expenses and more taxes to an already overtaxed area.
based on your statements, you simply don't care or know about the basic economic principles I am applying to vote no. i.e. you must be a WSVILLE TEACHER.
you comments simply are trying to use fear "do it for the children" approach and how it will impact their education. classic "fear monging" approach which is why the school budget will always pass.

ADDIT- Guess what...that is 29 Million in physical improvements. Guess who is going to do that work ...... = Developers! You, who think local developers are the scum of the Earth and are behind devious plans all the time should feel duped! You just voted to pad them with millions in profit! All of this is an obvious way to disguise local developers profitering off of stimulus dollars and collecting all of the rainy day funds and 10 million in new bonds by taxpayers. Instead of spending three years of your time blocking one rezoning for private development you just voted to give the same people you hate 29million in Public dollars - HA ! Or Oops! ...some sarcasm in there.
