    Italian Festival takes stage

To the organizers of the Sorrento Cheese Italian Heritage Festival, the annual summer event is about more than just sausage, cannolis and spaghetti.

As the festival's name implies, it is about the city's deep Italian heritage.

The festival is one of the largest of the summer, attracting more than 500,000 people during a four-day run that ends July 16.

Besides the 110 vendors who will be on Hertel Avenue, between Colvin Boulevard and Delaware Avenue, the festival will have a decidedly Old World feeling this year. There is an interactive exhibit highlighting some of Leonardo da Vinci's creations. There also will be greeters from one of Buffalo's sister cities, Torremaggiore, Italy, and entertainers such as Tony Galla and former "Saturday Night Live" comic Joe Piscopo.

People who wonder if the glass is half empty or full miss the point. The glass is refillable.

I'm glad they're highlighting that end of Hertel. There's a lot of empty storefronts there and it will point out that there's still plenty of room to move into on Hertel.

Hey-It also means all those great restaurants east of Colvin will be open.

    Woooo Hoooo!

The only stupid thing that they do is still close off Hertel from Delaware to Virgil. They do not even utilize that section of the street which is a waste. Why not setup more booths, stages, amusement rides again, something.
I agree that this end of Hertel between Commonwealth and Delaware has many vacancies. It'd be nice for a few more shops to open up at our end.
There was supposed to be a new steakhouse opened at Fairchild Place and Hertel but I now see our useless "new" councilman LoCurto has setup shop there.
It's a nice time of year though on my street Virgil. Many of the neighbors come out of the woodwork, have parties, etc. Can't get this atmosphere in the burbs!
