NFTA cuts metro rail for concerts

Expected overflow crowds at Buffalo Place's "Thursday at the Square" concert series has prompted the Niagara Frontier Transportation Authority to adjust Metro Rail in downtown Buffalo.

For four "Thursday" concerts, the Metro Rail trains will suspend their service between the Lafayette and Church Street Stations -- both of which take riders directly behind the stage in Lafayette Square. The shutdown will only occur between 7:15 p.m. and 9:15 p.m. when concert crowds peak.

The NFTA will run shuttle service between the two stations for those who ride the Metro Rail.

The switch is being made for Thursday's India.arie along with the July 27 Robert Randolph and Family Band show, the Aug. 3 Violent Femmes concert and the Aug. 31 Eric Burdon and the Animals concert.

Regular Metro Rail service will remain in effect for all other "Thursday at the Square" shows.

it was insanely packed last night. They added a video screen so you could actually see her sing.

    They estimated 30,000 people there.

BUt why do they want to suspend the service? No room to get the buses through?

Main St itself was full of people last night, so they would have had to constantly clear the road for the trains.

It obviously needs to be moved elsewhere, at least a couple of blocks away from the subway tracks. The event has outgrown its current location. "Thursday NEAR the Square" would be good enough, I'm sure. Niagara Square is much larger, and they wouldn't hafta change the name !

    What are you talking about??

Do you mean Buffalo Place, or M&T? Neither is at Lafayette Square.

    TITS would become TINS.

Perhaps the new name would be Concert at Niagara Square, or CANS.

I think the reason it hasn't moved to Niagara Square is because that square is a major thoroghfare for the city (Delaware Ave and Niagara) and shutting down the street every thurs at 5pm could cause headaches for all the offices that face that street.

Since Lafayette Square is on a pedestrian mall, it makes it much easier to block it off to traffic... especially since the trains are usually not shut down. So there is minimal traffic impact.

Shutting down Niagara Sq. every week would have a much bigger traffic impact.
