You got me, I did try to be diplomatic, and not resort to any name calling, but I fell into the trap some of you have set....You will see no more name inappropriate language from I.

I got caught in that ticket thing. What gets me is people whining about the cops *doing their jobs*.Originally Posted by biker
Personally, I'm glad they caught more drunks, more people 'bending' the law and enforced more seatbelts, etc.
I'm an honest middle class taxpayer--- but then, I went into my ticket thinking cops were the good guys. I'm guessing those who think like you went into it already thinking they are the bad guys.
Welcome to Speakup, Jess.
Although it sounds like we won't agree on much, I hope you post often.

Thanks for the welcome. I didn't see a place to introduce myself.
But, we may agree on every issue other than this one. Your posts have not set my teeth on edge
True. I've even won over former antagonists: as you become more familiar with other posters here on SU, you'll never believe that two of my most ardent fans (therising and Stevenco) were once hostile.Originally Posted by jess66

I have a Brother that is a lawyer for worker's comp (in California) and he handles mainly police cases.
I've read about the huge range of injuires cops get.
Yes, law enforcement personel CHOOSE to risk their health and lives, but some cities have larger police departments, faster response time (for officers down) and many cities have a much lower violent rate of crime than Buffalo
Police officers are prone to a higher rate of depression and suicide.
CHIPS or motorcycle cops get neck injuries from wearing a VERY heavy helmet and have a high risk of getting hit by reckless motorists.
Truth be told, whenever an officer walks up to a car they've pulled over, they do not know what threat may be waiting for them.
YES, cops DO choose their jobs and YES there's an overabundance of adrenaline junkies and cowboys but the truth is,
Police officers are our last line of defense. Period.
As much as many citizens protest over real and falsified police harassment, racism, brutality and other crimes-Without the police, we would have total anarchy.
I know that cops CHOOSE the risks their profession entails, but Buffalo is a much more dangerous city to patrol in than the Town Of Amherst, where being a cop seems to be FAR safer probably because Amherst has an ARMY of officers.
I've had some problems with police harassment in and around Buffalo but I won't lie, not ALL cops are bad-
TRY AND IMAGINE A WORLD WITHOUT THE POLICE TO KEEP CIVIL ORDER.
I don't think that most people could handle total anarchy and chaos.
I am NOT "kissing the a-- " of the police by any means, but we NEED the police, like them or not and in THIS corrupt city filled with all kinds of nepotism and "under the counter favors" for politicians in comfortable offices with private cars and all kinds of other perks-
To the police reading this and on this blog: PLEASE, for God's sake stop pretending that there isn't a disproportionate number of officers (compared to other occupations) that abuse their power in varying degrees. Then again, only a fool would admit that there's rampant corruption among their peers-Sorry, had to put that in here.
The "parking ticket blitz' did not enamour the public to the police-It ticked a lot of people off.
You guys (and women) should be able to be MUCH MORE CREATIVE to nudge the control board to FINALLY give the OK to your raises.
But out of simple fairness and for the hazards the police face,
THEY DESERVE THEIR DAMNED RAISE!!!
I'll go out on an limb and say that the money spent to lure "Bass Pro" to Buffalo should have gone to the raises promised to the police.
Politicians are public servants just like the police, except they seem to have NO problems with all the extra perks their positions bring-
I've given this matter careful thought, doing my BEST to be objective and imagine what the cops are going through and in all honesty, I would be FURIOUS if I was an officer denied a raise that I was PROMISED, a raise that would go towards the mentally and physically exausting jobs MOST police do in Buffalo.
Coincidence is the word we use when we can't see the levers and pulleys.

Let me just respond to this point: "'ll go out on an limb and say that the money spent to lure "Bass Pro" to Buffalo should have gone to the raises promised to the police."Originally Posted by Dumbfounded
Don't climb too far out on that limb! The pot(s) of money that are being directed to Bass Pro and Waterfront Development ARE NOT the pots of money that pay raises or any other salaries- they are development dollars and come from a variety of funding streams that promote development in our urban areas.
if society prioritized, tax dollars would only go to essential services. It isn't going to happen, but it is nice to dream.
Why do people focus only on Buffalo PD! There are over 5000 state troopers making over $100,000 + benefits! Why arent you complaining about them?!
They don't do half of what a Buffalo cop does, everyday!
The damn state has a budget hole of over 4 BILLION! You are state taxpayers, too!
Just a guess here, but I'd think most people would start closest to home and work their way up to bigger things? In other words, tackle things for which you have the most direct input.Originally Posted by RPD86
