Report on the Taste of Freedom

The Taste of Freedom has three goals. In order of priority, they are

    (1) raising money;
    (2) promoting Free Buffalo, Free Niagara and Free New York;
    (3) having a great time.

Point three is actually quite important because making new friends and strengthening old friendships is important to building morale and esprit de'corp. If we win this fight, it will not be because we have more money or more paid troops. It will be because of all the intangibles. That’s how underdogs usually win.

We have the event at the Central Terminal to promote the Terminal’s restoration and to bring attention to the plight of the East Side. We believe we are one region and no neighborhood should be left behind. There are serious administrative burdens to having an event there. To make money, we need a large crowd. We did not have a large enough crowd last Saturday. Our best estimate is somewhat over 300. (Keep in mind that Tom Suozzi drew 300 people at a free event with free food in downtown Buffalo at noon on a sunny day.) Because of our large administrative costs we did not make a profit this year.

We intend to rework the Taste of Freedom concept for next year to attract more people and lower our cost. As with last year, we had bad weather. Actually, it might have been the worst day of the year, relative to the date. We moved the date to a week later but this brought on even worse weather! Who knows why the turnout was disappointing? We will be reviewing all the possible factors in the coming months to ensure a better result next year.

I remain convinced that the majority of citizens would support our basic message if they learned about it. Perhaps our promotional efforts were inadequate. I did the best I could and appeared on the three political talk radio stations the week of the party. We did a small ad buy on WKBW in connection with having a promotional table at the Democratic Convention. (The control freak dems wouldn't let us put our sign up--funny, they were welcome at ours!) I did meet Bill Press and was a guest on his syndicated radio show. So, a national media contact was made.

We’ll try different approaches next year.

In every other way, the Taste of Freedom was a big success. We used the opportunity to heavily promote our organization and our research papers and essays, several of which were published in the weeks leading up to the event. Numerous new and enthusiastic faces attended and took away many copies of our studies.

Several public officials and candidates attended and Amherst Supervisor Satish Mohan received our Thomas Jefferson Award and gave a very nice speech.

    Other officials and candidates included:

Councilwoman Shelly Schratz; Rus Thompson, who is running against Sam Hoyt; Tom Casey, who is running against Dale Volker; Max Tresmond, who is running against Jack Quinn, Jr.; Eddie Egriu , running against State Senator Marc Coppola; Councilman Antoine Thompson, also running against Mr. Coppola; Judge Craig Hannah ; and his opponent Assistant DA Tom Kubiniak. Also, Jeff Russell the LP’s candidate for US Senate, who traveled from Albany. The State Libertarian Party had an information table staffed by local libertarians. (All parties and candidates had been invited.) Also, Free Buffalo supporter Andrea Haxton, member of the Lackawanna City Council.

    (Joel Rose)

Other tables included Literary Volunteers; Citizens Against Casino Gambling; and the Community Currency Association.

All the bands were superb and a variety of musical styles were on display all day.

    *Dee Adams

    *Sugar & Jazz

    *Steve Roth and Meredith Brown

*Maria Sebastian and the Damn Straights

The food was great as supplied by neighborhood vendors Potts Deli and Scharf’s Restaurant.

Bill Kauffman and Robert Swados spoke about their respective books.

Copies of our latest study, Who Runs Buffalo were made available.

Media coverage included Channel 7, the Am-Pol Eagle and PoliticsNY.net. Coverage is down from last year, but our media coverage overall is phenomenal so we can hardly complain.

Those who came had a good time, especially kids. We did have more kids this year, and, between the face-painting, “reading room”, my son’s dinosaur collection, and best of all Dodo the Clown, they were cackling all day and racing up and down the 75-yard long concourse. I felt bad for those families that couldn’t make it.

Mike Rebmann took lots of great photos.

Let me end by quoting the State motto, which our state politicians don’t follow, but we do: Excelsior!

    OMG

aflac, aflac, aflac!!!!! it took you this long to duck out of answering a specific question?

for someone in the area of doing a "study" of something.... numbers are the key to writing such things, so why on earth could you have neglected to mention just how many ppl attended?

I thought that "study" was posted on this MB as a "preliminary" report?

I was not that far off on my guesstimate of 75 to 100 when I was there in the afternoon so 300 is a realistic number for the day.

Anyways the old Centeral Terminal was interesting to see.

if 300 was the real count that he neglected to answer in a different thread - what took so long in posting it sooner?

next question: sooo...? FB took in $3,000 on this fundraiser- how much did they make after expenses? which items were donated?

Jim, who does the planning for the event?
People who wonder if the glass is half empty or full miss the point. The glass is refillable.

Why is any of this your concern? Are they accountable to you??

why is it a concern to you, just the same? what is the need to know why i wanted to know something. i'd say 95% of the crap could have been avoided if the question of attendees was just answered from the begining.

Keep badgering, eventually they will relent and give up the numbers and then well nothing will have changed but you'll have the numbers.
