New York state residents' per capita tax burden is again the highest in the country, data released Thursday by the U.S. Census Bureau shows.

The information for fiscal 2004 showed New York's per capita tax bill at $5,260, once state and local taxes are added up.

The New York total was 53 percent above the national average of $3,447 and $339 per person higher than state and local taxes in the No. 2 state, Connecticut.
