    WNED $100K grant recipient

The Western New York Public Broadcasting Association was selected as the winner of a $100,000 grant from the 21st Century Fund, a program of the Community Foundation for Greater Buffalo.

WNED will use the funds to create the Buffalo Architecture Experience, a collaboration with the Buffalo Niagara Convention & Visitors Bureau and the Landmark Society of the Niagara Frontier to promote Buffalo as an architectural tourism destination.

    Ridiculous.
Not that it isn't a great idea- it is! Ridiculous that the CVB needed outside funding to get this promotion effort going. The County cut the CVB budget by half during the budget mess. This is money that is raised by the hotel tax but diverted to the general fund. Studies have shown that money spent on marketing the area for conventions and tourism is a wise investment with a significant return on each dollar spent. And, the County spends much less on tourism marketing than our peer regions. Here's a solution- ALL the money raised by the bed tax should pay for the convention center and promotion! DUH. Penny wise and pound foolish.

Doesn't the law say that all the bed tax money is dedicated to tourism? At least that's what the hotelier-types were saying when the CVB budget was originally cut.

    Penny foolish and pound stupid.

This is where the county went wrong. Their justification for using funds meant for one target are "borrowed" for another. And once someone does it, all others feel justified in doing it. Now it's a hopeless tangle and should be taken back to square one, and this is what I thought the Control Board would do.
Same goes for the state budget.
The money trail gets very complicated.

The money wasn't intended for other uses other than to promote tourism. THe day it's not used for that then the hotels should stop collecting it.

I think this is where user fees lose their "street cred". I really believe there is a positive role user fees can play in keeping taxpayers aware of what their gov't is doing. If the money from park fees is really limited to parks, money from hotels limited to tourism, etc. then it effectively itemizes the tax bills. I believe that there should be some general funding for things like parks and roads, but user fees can be positive. Like speaker said, the politicos just have it all mucked up. All of a sudden, people would be able to say "why is ______ costing 25% more all of a sudden?" instead of having general increases rolled together into a sales or property tax hike.

I'm glad WNED got the grant, it certainly will go to better use than the awful "Art on Wheels" project they funded a couple years ago http://www.burchfield-penney.org/aow/
