My lawn looks like crap. I used to have ChemLawn come and do it. It always looked great. But after losing 3 pets to huge tumor cancers, I decided to let the lawn go to nature.

Ever have trouble with buttercups (besides them showing you like butter?)?

My flower bed gets droves of the things every year from a neighboring yard, and they kill everything in their path. I just spent the morning pulling them varmits out.

Our lawn has weeds, but not what I would consider an excessive amount. Only thing that bothers me is that creeping Charlie crap that just vines along. Otherwise, I can tolerate some dandelions...

My lawn looked awful last year due to a hugh (infected) tree that cast shade and encouraged moss to take over my front lawn. Thetree gone, I raked myself to near collapse and ended up w/lots of bare spots...I spread gypsum in early spring (the rain leeches it through the clay and helps break it down (I do it in the fall also) I sprinkled around Mr.K's Special Garden Blend (JF Krantz) topsoil & grass seed, water religiously...

I'm also going to go the Scotts route, thanks for the advice

speaker, I've got a similar neighbor, buttercups and bishops weed

    your weed is my flower

A weed is an unwanted plant. I have learned to want them all. the best way to kill dandelions is to try to grow them for wine, they all die.
to me the sole purpose of a lawn is to hold down the dirt so it is not tracked into the house, washed away, or carried away by the wind. my yard was once nothing but clay and shale. the moss that grew years ago has long since became top soil the at now supports a few blades of grass. why fight dandelions they look just like yellow mums and are much cheaper to grow.
best way to get rid of weeds is really a healthy lawn, mow three inches high to shade any seeds water regularly and water deep. feed the lawn in the fall so it survives the winter and again when it starts to grow. myself I don't care what comes up in my lawn,
I have large patches of thick moss that I actually try to keep spreading. Lily of the valley takes over some areas as does forget-me-nots. sweet William sprouts in a few areas. right now prim roses are being mowed around. I even have trumpet vine sprouting in one section I have given away hundreds of these,
why go broke fighting nature for that perfect lawn, sit back and enjoy the variety. enjoy nature you cant beat it. A neighbor once tried to have chem lawn do my lawn he said he would pay for it just so my weed seeds would stop blowing on his lawn. boy did he hate me when I started growing domestic dandelions. feed them suckers right and they grow almost two feet tall with three inch flowers that bury everything around them when they turn to seed. that and the thistle really let him know I did not believe in lawn chemicals. my yard is on line some where. I think my space has twenty or thirty pictures on it. I got the address right only once so I wont try it here. its on the blog wanted thread i think

Sting wrote a song about my lawn... Fields of Gold.

Seriously, I have so many dandelions and other weeds that last year I bought some weed killer to spread and I've been afraid to put it down to this date. I'm pretty sure I wouldn't have any green left.

WOW--thanks, ragin--I think I have it. Is it very invasive? Rhizomes, huh? Yes, I think I've run into those critters back there. I don't mind weeds in the field, of course, but they kill my flowers. Right now I have a ton of forgetmenots which are so pretty.
