Drug War Pact Raises Tension Between Uribe, Chavez: Week Ahead

Aug. 24 (Bloomberg) -- A plan for Colombia to allow U.S. troops to use its military bases to fight drug traffickers has divided South American leaders, with Venezuelan President Hugo Chavez condemning it as a U.S. strategy to dominate the region.
Presidents from 12 Latin American countries will meet in Argentina this week in a bid to defuse tensions over the accord. Chavez, whose opposition is backed by allies such as Ecuador’s President Rafael Correa, threatened to limit trade with Colombia after the agreement was announced, pushing the Colombian peso to its weakest level this month on Aug. 11.
“It violates the sovereignty of Colombia,” Chavez said yesterday on his weekly television program “Alo,Presidente.” “It also threatens our sovereignty. These soldiers in Colombia could do anything against Venezuela, and nobody could touch them.”
The debate has split Latin leaders since Colombia’s President Alvaro Uribe, 57, undertook a regional tour earlier this month to win support for his intentions to give 800 U.S. troops and 600 contractors access to seven bases. Further discussions will take place at a summit of the Union of South American Nations in Bariloche, a Patagonian lakeside resort, on Aug. 28.

But in all reality those drug cartels control the govt in colombia.
My solution to the problem is simple, legalize drugs and regulate them. We aren't going to win the war on drugs.
