Wow. Really? I don't remember that at all. Anyone have further recollection about this? I ride my bike through there regularly... gonna be a bit creepy with this in mind.

    unsolved murder in Tonawanda

This is an interesting topic. I remember they found a body of a young female on the railroad tracks along Millitary Rd in Tonawanda. (Not sure what year). You could see American Brass (Sanchez place of work) from the tracks. In Delano's book, he said he didn't feel like Sanchez was responsible for this murder. He doesn't go into detail but it sure seems to fit Sanchez' M.O. I know they never arrested anyone in this case.

Kathy Herold, killed in 1985, behind the now-demolished grain mills.

    Crimelibrary.com excerpt:

"One striking similarity is the location Kathy Herold's body was discovered along the same railroad tracks where detectives say Sanchez raped two women not far from American Brass where he worked."

"But it was the death of Joan Diver that detecties say sparked their interest in Sanchez. Neither woman was sexually assualted, both violently fought their attacker, and while Kathy Herold died of manual strangulation detectives now say there's evidence her killer first used a ligature."

I saw the following in the Buffalo News. Even though it isn't a direct match to this thread, I thought it'd fit well here. Frankly, I didn't know about the guy before reading this. Very cool. Sounds like a top notch guy. Enjoy retirement!

"...Capt. Michael J. Melton, 65, retired after 41 years with the Amherst Police Department."

Imagine the stories he could tell. Prolly a lot of stuff we'd not want to know, eh.

The Virginia E. Malecki murder was the one case your parents always talked about.
If you google her full name there's a link to book written about old murders in Buffalo and WNY.
The 25 preview pages online are very interesting.

Another unsolved case is the murder of Billy Sciolino, March 7, 1980. The case is attributed to Buffalo organized crime.

You're thinking of Nancy Scamurra, who went missing 25 years ago.
Several people in-the-know felt at the time, without elaborating, that she was in fact a runaway.
    Here's more.

But for the fairly high-profile of the family, I suspect not as much would have been made of it media-wise.

Remember the Peter Piccolo case? I think that case still remains unsolved.

How about Russell Mort, who went missing in 1982 from Lynch's trailer park on River Rd. in Wheatfield.

These two, courtesy of this link, are among the most gruesome unsolved WNY homicides:

October 8, 1979, 71-year-old Parler Edwards, a black taxi driver, was found in the trunk of his car, parked in suburban Amherst, his heart cut out and carried from the scene.
Next day, another black cabbie, 40-year-old Ernest Jones, was found beside the Niagara River in Tonawanda, the heart ripped from his chest. His blood-spattered taxi was retrieved by police in Buffalo, three miles away.

Um... O.M.G.!!! I don't suppose there are two Scamurra families on Scamridge(?). 'cuz, like, in th late '70s I kinda knew a Scamurra... who, I'm guessing, was this girls older sister. Holy crap.

These two were the handiwork of Joseph Christoper, aka the "22 calibre killer", per this item. Note that he was convicted on only three counts of first degree murder - out of an undisputed possible full count of thirteen.

"Mandy Steingasser, a 17-year- old North Tonawanda High School student, was last seen alive on Sept. 19, 1993, on her way to a First Avenue party. Her body was found more than a month later on Oct. 25 at Bonds Lake Park near Lewiston. No arrests have ever been made.

That one isn't cold per se. It just lacks the right evidence...

How about all the "solved" crimes that ended in conviction of the innocent?

The Capozzi case was not a "cold case" - it was a closed case.
