The employment picture brightened in the Buffalo-Niagara Falls area in March with an increase in jobs and no increase in the unemployment rate.
The state Department of Labor said Thursday the Buffalo metro added a total of 3,100 jobs, or 0.6 percent, from March of last year. That boost was triggered by the private sector, which increased employment by 2,400 jobs, or 0.5 percent. Last month's unemployment rate was 5.6 percent, even with March 2005, and down from 5.9 percent in February.
Rochester was the only statewide metropolitan area to suffer a loss of jobs, dropping 8,100, or 1.6 percent. The labor department said the number of private-sector jobs fell by 7,600, or 1.8 percent, putting that area's unemployment rate at 5 percent in March 2006, compared with 5 percent in March 2005 and 5.1 percent in February.
Overall, New York state's unemployment rate was 4.7 percent last month, same as February and the lowest level for the month in five years.

People who wonder if the glass is half empty or full miss the point. The glass is refillable.
Any word on what kind of jobs? Maybe an uptick in construction, thanks to a generally mild winter and spring (so far)?Originally Posted by steven
