Cop: 'if you don’t want to get shot...just do what I tell you.'

"If you don't want to get shot, tased, pepper-sprayed, struck with a baton or thrown to the ground," warns Officer Sunil Dutta of the Los Angeles Police Department, "just do what I tell you."

The thing is, Officer Dutta (pictured) is also an Adjunct Professor of Homeland Security and Criminal Justice at Colorado Technical University. And he uttered those words not in the heat of the moment, but in an opinion piece in the Washington Post responding to widespread criticism of police attitudes and tactics currently on display in Ferguson, Missouri, but increasingly common nationwide.

    Dutta continues:

Don't argue with me, don't call me names, don't tell me that I can't stop you, don't say I'm a racist pig, don't threaten that you'll sue me and take away my badge. Don't scream at me that you pay my salary, and don't even think of aggressively walking towards me. Most field stops are complete in minutes. How difficult is it to cooperate for that long?

Dutta actually comes off as a reasonable law enforcement officer, when compared to some of his colleagues who can be found venting on police-only bulletin boards or referring to Ferguson protesters as "****ing animals." Dutta acknowledges that police can abuse their authority, saying "When it comes to police misconduct, I side with the ACLU: Having worked as an internal affairs investigator, I know that some officers engage in unprofessional and arrogant behavior; sometimes they behave like criminals themselves."

He endorses the use of body cameras and dashcams to record interactions between police and the public. He counsels, "you don't have to submit to an illegal stop or search. You can refuse consent to search your car or home if there's no warrant."

And yet he demands unresisting submission to police without argument or even legal protest. Just how do you "refuse consent to search your car or home" without running afoul of the no-nos Dutta warns may get you "shot, tased, pepper-sprayed, struck with a baton or thrown to the ground"?

Remember, this is a thoughtful police officer, with a PhD., who teaches criminal justice.

If you have the attitude that you are owed deference and instant obedience by the people around you, and that you are justified in using violence against them if they don't comply, we already have a problem. That's especially true if official institutions back you up, which they do.

If you really think that everybody else should "just do what I tell you," you're wearing the wrong uniform in the wrong country. And if you really can't function with some give and take—a few nasty names, a little argument—of the sort that people in all sorts of jobs put up with every damned day, do us all a favor: quit.

The law enforcement problem in this country goes well beyond boys with toys. It's much deeper, and needs to be torn out by the roots.

It is so outrageous I think its either a hoax or a "social experiment" or an attempt to inflame the Ferguson situation.

    1. If he is a real police officer, he will never be able to shoot anyone under any circumstances without this article coming back to haunt him. There are some dumb cops, hard to believe any would be this dumb.

    2. If you wanted to rile people up against the Ferguson police department, then pose a s a police officer and express an outrageous opinion that people can then transfer to the officer who fired the fatal shot and the officers who are trying to quell the riots.

    3. If he is really a member of the LAPD his fellow officers must be thinking "thanks a lot jerk - you just made life so much more difficult and dangerous for all of us."

Ah, but it turns out he is also a liar - he is not a professor at CTU: Cut and past from a recent online chat with CTU:

Cassandra: Hello and thank you for contacting Colorado Technical University. How may I assist you today?

you: Sunil Dutta really a professor of homeland security at Colorado Tech University?

Cassandra: Welcome to live chat. Colorado Technical University has a longstanding commitment to fostering a learning environment that emphasizes tolerance and respect. The author of this opinion piece has previously worked as an adjunct instructor for Colorado Technical University, but does not currently have any teaching assignments with the university.

Cassandra: The opinions he expressed are his own and do not reflect official views of the university.

I bet every cop agrees with, and believes in Dutta's sentiment about doing what he tells you.

A rarity amongst law enforcement is the guy that sees himself as a regular guy. They almost all believe they're "cops". These dolts don't understand it's a job. It's what you do for a living, it's not who you are...

Besides 5 year old boys, and Steven, who is impressed by cops? What possesses them to think they're impressive, besides the gun and badge they hide behind?

I am impressed by good police officers. I am outraged by bad police officers.

As for trying to say it's just a job...for every cop that wants to be a cop 24/7, there is a resident who wants to treat cops like they are on duty 24/7. It goes both ways and it's obviously impacted by good police v. bad police.

As for saying you're not impressed and that they hide behind a badge, again, for every townie that claims this, there is an equal number of townies who talk sh*t about police but would not engage if the badge and gun were not involved. They would puss out and hide behind the stance of..I'll just get arrested.

Here is what I know in knowing many level headed officers who simply want to do their job and call it a day. Most people, when given rope will hang themselves because most people are morons. They don't care enough what townies think to be affected. They are going to write the ticket and be on their way.

Even the "good officers" are bad officers, and this goes for friends and family of mine.
They're all aware of fellow officers that unnecessarily beat the hell out of cuffed perps, or rough up somebody for talking back at the officer, yet they never report it. That is illegal. It's beyond professional courtesy of not ticketing a fellow officer for speeding, or letting them park illegally. They literally cover up felonies and other abuses of power by turning a blind eye.

That cop from Molly's (actually both of them) are well known amongst their peers as being violent. The one cop's uncle was fired for holding his service weapon to hookers heads while they serviced him. Cops know of the other nuts amongst them and don't say a word, most likely just in case the screw up and need somebody else to turn a blind eye.

I don't believe there is such a thing as an honest cop. There are plenty of good guys that are cops, but that doesn't make them honest, or good cops.

I say this as a guy that believes cops have a difficult job to do. I also believe some people deserve an extra smack sometimes. I just don't trust their collective judgement.

I almost forgot...the hiding behind the badge and gun part...

I can't count the amount of times I've seen some jackass flash a badge after he was acting like a punk. They're the same ones (and their buddies) that cause a ruckus and taunt somebody to call the cops.
My best bud is a bflo copper, and the stories are hilarious, but at the same time pathetic.

I know I'm coming off as anti-cop, and it used to drive me crazy when people were like that, but it has gotten out of control. I don't know if its cell phone cameras, or if people aren't willing to take their crap anymore, but the police are out of control as a whole.

If they want to play billy badass, they should join the army or marines.

    August 19, 2014 : Any where America.

Any way: Cop: 'if you don’t want to get shot...just do what I tell you.'

"If you don't want to get shot, tased, pepper-sprayed, struck with a baton or thrown to the ground just do what I tell you."

Americas answer to that should be :

If you have the attitude that you are owed deference and instant obedience by the people around you, and that you are justified in using violence against them if they don't comply, we already have a problem.

I wonder if you can sue the "good" officers for turning a blind eye to an officer that does something illegal. That would wake them up a little bit don't you think? But you make the officers cover their own lawsuit cost not the tax payers. If an officer knows another officer who is dealing drugs yet doesn't say anything it is almost like they are an accessory to the issue.

I get what you're saying but I do not think it's all of them. I think the closer and more frequent they are to having to interact with the scum of the earth, the more likely they are to become jerks.

I will also add that people are significantly bigger a**holes these days to police. Just look at the immediate reaction to what happened in Ferguson. Idiots like Linda jumped to call what happened murder. Then, as the protests go on, these idiots think they can do whatever they want as long as they 'keep their hands up'......

You want to see how bad it is...go to the WorldStarHipHop website. You see videos of people who film a guy getting bludgeoned in the head multiple times with a hammer and the guy holding the phone does nothing but yell 'World Star'.... Absolute animals. So when you have to deal with people like that, people who beat the sh*t out of their kids or spouse or the list of every other f'd up thing that goes on but never reported on...it's hard not to be the Happy-Go-Lucky Barney Fife that dipsh*ts want police to be.

Police are covered by immunity, or they 'wouldnt be able to do their jobs'

We have been over this res. When it comes to Officer misconduct, you have zero recourse as the justice system is most often slanted in protecting their fellow govt employee.
