Huey P. Newton Gun Club Pushes #BlackOpenCarry to Protest Police Violence

In Texas, blacks are protesting police violence in a particularly Southwestern way: By invoking their right to open carry. On Wednesday, more than 30 members of the newly-formed Huey P. Newton Gun Club gathered to march through South Dallas with rifles, shotguns, and AR-15s. The group eventually entered a restaurant with their weapons while Dallas police officers were inside eating lunch.

Huey P. Newton Gun Club ARMED SELF DEFENSE PATROL IN DALLAS, TX

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE:

August 17, 2014

The recent murders of unarmed black, brown, and whites across the United States of America has eradicated trust in the police. Individuals across this nation have been stripped of due process, subjected to state-sponsored police terrorism, and continue to suffer the fate of being terminated extra-judicially.

In Dallas the police have murdered over 70 unarmed individuals, most of the black and brown men, over the last ten years. Excluding a recent incident where police testimony was contradicted by surveillance footage, there have been no indictments since 1973.

The people, who are gunned down and murdered by violent and militarized police forces, have formed the Huey P. Newton Gun Club, for the specifc purpose of self defense and community policing.

In response, Black and Brown residents of the City of Dallas will conduct the first of an ongoing and necessary armed self defense patrols through our communities in the coming week.

We, the Huey P. Newton Gun Club, hereby put forth the following non-negotiable demands and promote these conditions for the protection of our communities:

1. We demand the immediate end to police brutality, harassment, and murder of the people.

2. We assert the right of the people, particularly those of color, to bear arms and protect themselves where local, state, and the federal government have historically failed to do so.

3. We demand that the media, in coordination with police, cease immediately assassinating the character of victims subject to police terrorism.

Protestors, Armed With Assault Weapons, March In Dallas
August 20, 2014 5:25 PM

DALLAS (CBS 11 NEWS) – In some regards, it was a provocative and potentially dangerous mixed message: protestors armed with assault weapons simultaneously calling for an end to police shootings—while also advocating self-defense.

“Black people have a right to self-defense and self-determination,” insisted Huey Freeman. “We want to be proactive.”

Freeman and about three dozen others calling themselves the ‘Huey P. Newton Gun Club’, after one of the founders of the original Black Panther party, marched and chanted for about an hour through south Dallas Wednesday.

A new group calling itself the Huey P. Newton Gun Club launched armed self-defense patrols Wednesday with one stated purpose: to protect Dallas neighbors from police.

Group leader Huby Freeman said the group wants to educate neighbors about the right to bear arms and the need for it.

"We believe we can police ourselves and bring security to our community, ridding our community of black-on-black crime, violence, police terror, et cetera, et cetera," Freeman said.

Several rallies took place Wednesday in both Dallas and Arlington, where demonstrators protested against police shootings.

The streets of downtown Dallas were filled Wednesday night with hundreds of demonstrators.

The rally started at 8 p.m. and was part of an event called Don't Shoot Dallas. It was sparked on social media with the hashtag #DontShoot.

Earlier Wednesday, other demonstrators held an open carry gun march through South Dallas to protest against police shootings.

Organizers there said the show of force served as a reminder of the right to bear arms to protect themselves from criminals and from police.
