PHH Mortgage Corp. has not yet determined where it will permanently locate its Amherst operations, even as construction of a $34 million office originally built for the mortgage service company comes to a close.

PHH spokesperson Dico Akseraylian said the New Jersey firm “remain(s) committed to the Amherst area” and it is “exploring options for a permanent location,” but no decision has been made regarding space needs.

The 97,000-square-foot office building at 1760 Wehrle Drive was expected to be occupied by PHH later this year. But in early May, PHH confirmed that it was rethinking its plans following job cuts that affected 135 people.

PHH currently leases two offices in Amherst at 170 Northpointe Parkway and 220 Northpointe Parkway, and it is in line to lease the new office on Wehrle Drive. Post-layoffs, PHH now employs approximately 265 people in Amherst.

Zaepfel Development is building the new office. Vice president Greg Zaepfel said his company is waiting to hear back from PHH about its plans. He said the building is on track to be ready for occupancy in August.

The project received $4.5 million in various tax incentives from the Amherst Industrial Development Agency and Empire State Development Corp. It is unclear if it will still qualify for those exemptions if PHH backs out of its lease.
