Absolutely, what a neat gesture!
The favor I am asking for is when you have your barbecue or picnic this weekend, leave a seat or a place-setting for the spirit of a fallen soldier. I will be doing the same to honor all of the friends I left behind.
A soldiers Poem
He was getting old and paunchy
And his hair was falling fast,
And he sat around the Legion,
Telling stories of the past.
Of a war that he once fought in
And the deeds that he had done,
In his exploits with his buddies;
They were heroes, every one.
And 'tho sometimes to his neighbors
His tales became a joke,
All his buddies listened quietly
For they knew where of he spoke.
But we'll hear his tales no longer,
For ol' Bob has passed away,
And the world's a little poorer
For a soldier died today.
He won't be mourned by many,
Just his children and his wife.
For he lived an ordinary,
Very quiet sort of life.
If we cannot do him honor
While he's here to hear the praise,
Then at least let's give him homage
At the ending of his days.
Perhaps just a simple headline
in the paper that might say:
"OUR COUNTRY IS IN MOURNING,
A SOLDIER DIED TODAY."

Steven, were you in Iraq? if so, which operation - storm or freedom?
Amen! I lost a lot of friends over the years in many different campaigns. I always leave an empty seat and a full plate for them.
I lost a leg and have shrapenel in my lower back from the last gulf war. But the worst part was losing 3 of my best friends.

Beautifully stated. Makes me wish I was doing something besides working this weekend. It also reminds me to run out to the cemetery to put a flag out for my dad.

What a nice gesture. I will remember to do it...We often hear stories about veterans as they get older telling stories about the wars they fought, and iti becoming a joke with some people. I had three uncles who were veterans, two in WWII and one in Vietnam. None of them ever talked about what they experienced. Not even to my aunts. it would not have bothered me if they had talked about it. I guess everyone deals with it differently.

On this day we honor all dead. But we also honor and thank those living, who made it through with or without injury. They have to carry the memory of it all, mostly that of their friends and comrades who aren't here to celebrate our freedom.

It's not really an empty gesture. It reminds all of us but especially the children what the day is all about.
