Private employers in the Buffalo-Niagara Falls metropolitan area reported slight monthly employment increases for January.

The state Department of Labor said Wednesday private-sector growth inched up by 1,200 jobs, 0.3 percent for the first month of 2006, compared to the same month of 2005.

The area's unemployment rate was 5.6 percent in January, compared with 5.1 percent in December and 6.2 percent in January 2005.
Rochester's private-sector employment base was off 8,400 jobs, or 2 percent. The unemployment rate for that city was 5 percent in January, up from 4.6 percent in December and down from 5.6 in January 2005.
