Firms that get tax breaks must be held accountable

As an Amherst resident, I’m very tired of my town’s industrial development agency treating local taxpayers like an ATM in order to hand out public money to big corporations.

The most recent example is the $4.5 million in tax breaks the state and the Amherst IDA gave to PHH Mortgage Corp. in 2012. The company promised to retain 400 jobs and create 400 new ones in order to get this deal. Instead of living up to the agreement, PHH recently announced it will be laying off 135 local workers.

Will the Amherst IDA hold PHH accountable? Will the IDA make the company give back the taxpayer benefits it has received? Are there any penalties imposed for not keeping its end of the bargain, beyond returning our tax money? Don’t hold your breath!

This is another in a long line of bad deals the Amherst IDA has made, on behalf of local taxpayers, but a good deal for PHH. It got $4.5 million for nothing. The Amherst IDA benefits as well; it collects a fee from every deal it makes. The fee pays staffers’ salaries, giving them an incentive to approve more corporate subsidy deals.

Our tax money could be going toward improving our community. Instead, it’s going to line the pockets of PHH executives and Amherst IDA staff. Too many IDAs are enabling corporations to swindle taxpayers. It’s time for this to stop. Companies should not be able to take taxpayer dollars if they don’t live up to the subsidy agreement.

Our state legislators need to take action to build accountability measures into the “industrial” development system to prevent IDAs and corporations from using taxpayers like ATMs. I wonder how a mortgage corporation can be called industrial?

That's too funny. You can't post this on the message board. They are giving to the wealthy so that they can create jobs. They're job creators. If they spend they money in the community it will go to welfare bums. But this? This is not welfare. These are job creators being rewarded for their hard work in creating jobs. Besides, they are incentivizing hard work.

Furthermore, this is very anti-capitalist of you. PHH worked very hard to put itself up there as a premiere mortgage handler and wormed it's way into politics (because it could spread some money around) via competitive strategies (isn't this what competition is?) and now you want to crush their entrepreneurial spirit? Shame on you, you sound like some kind of socialist or worse, even a communist.

Are you asking for accountability? Isn't that some kind of oversight or *gasp* regulation? That's socialist talk. Burn!

Straw man alert..... Helping the truly needful is never an issue - it is the waste and fraud, in that system, that is the issue. Two COMPLETELY separate issues that you are trying to combine with your declaration.

I am all for no more IDA's. Level the playing field. Cut taxes for ALL!

No one is crushing anyone's entrepreneurial spirit. The point is when the businesses get the tax breaks and promise job creation, they need to create and retain the amount of jobs stated that they would create.

Hold them accountable? Your never going to hold them accountable.

We the people can't account for a Government lemonade stand, let alone anything like this. Look around.

ABOLISH the IDA's and lower the god damn taxes for everyone.

I'm no fan of ida's or tax breaks. Typically tax breaks are democratic schemes to allow extortionate fund raising for Democrats. Cuomo's idiotic, fraudulent, & likely unconstitutional scheme to allow tax free zones is a classic. If you don't count the thousands of state jobs created to monitor this boondoggle it's done nothing for upstate but pour bushels of $ into Il Duces campaign accounts. Let's cut taxes and allow communities to compete for jobs. Until then f*** Poloncarz, his nitwit clerk, Tobe, the Buffalo News and all rest who oppose the action of the Amherst IDA in creating wealth in the only shining light in this otherwise pathetic dying dump.

Allow me to say that I'm pleased that the Erie county Board of Elections has a job so simplistic that even Poloncarz' brother can handle it. Is it true that his primary duty is to watch the ink dry on the paper ballots as they're printed? Oh wait...I said they found a job Poloncarz' brother could actually handle!

No doubt about that, I am all for shutting down the whole dirty game.... and it is a game and it is dirty! I seen that even last week with my own eyes how Grisanti pretty much extorts support with funds... (grant funds - not ida, but same principle).
