    Exposing Olmsted Parks Conservancy

Sadly, this is one of the POOREST run non-profs in Buffalo.

First, a number of us kicked in (hundreds of dollars) to memorialize a deceased member with a tree planting several years ago, and have not yet been told the location of the planting--information we would love to share with his widow and their children.

Second, they are control freaks. If you have ever seen or met James, the young man who drives an ice-cream bike around the city, you know what a great guy he is. Here's a young man, trying to do things "right," and has been banned (by Olmsted) from the parks, where he is continually harassed by their staff.

He has, for the record, been banned from Buffalo Place because apparently he "doesn't fit in with their vision of Buffalo." Oh really? But the hot dog vendors do?

I would much rather buy ice-cream, or have my kids buy ice cream, from James, or his staff, on bikes rather than pedophile ice-cream truck clown-looking freaks.

James has employed eight people and really wants to make things work here, but these Olmsted idiots--and they aren't alone--are so afraid that someone else might make a buck that could have been theirs.

Another example of Buffalo shooting itself in the foot.

btw--one of his best customers is Mayor Brown. Go figure.

They have a real hard on for vendors and wont allow them in the parks unless they sell Olmstead "approved foods"
People who wonder if the glass is half empty or full miss the point. The glass is refillable.

Then, why the **** don't they open the Juicery? Right now, there is no competition for James. And there isn't any competition for ice cream sales on Chippewa Street or the Square - just beer. Oh, wait, that's right, from the Masiello palybook - only vendor on the street for Chip is LaNova, baby!

James is one of the most decent people I know - hard working, good product, fair in his dealings and a visionary to provide soemthing we haven't seen in a long time.

    Give him a freaking break!

    Bah!

It should be the Olmsted Parks CONSPIRACY!
I'm just here to make people laugh. And to confuse people. Oh, and to irritate people.

I dealt with Olmsted Parks. Their vision is to have a park the way it was in the early 1900s--- where they would only allow horse and buggy carriages. No concessions or sports allowed.

They tried at one point to ban all sports from the park because it wasn't in their vision. The politicians got an earful from the owners--- the citizens

The people own these parks period.. We set what we want-- not them.

One of the purposes of this non profit was so they could raise their own funds through grants and so they could get extra money thru fundraisers. Guess what, every year they demand more and more money from the county and city. We also maintain all of their equipment free of charge. They get free labor from social services( which is OK by me) but what they save goes to the top honchos in big salaries.

Lets get the facts first, then go for the jugular!!
It's all transparent, just read between the lines..

Interestingly, they have had a lot of support lately, including being voted (by whom?)-- for the second year in a row---beneficiaries of Corporate Challenge. They firmly believe the parks are theirs. Not sure that's what F.L. Olmsted intended.

Not to pat myself on the back but I gave them my "proposal" for tree planting memorials & tributes back I believe in 2004 as a fund raiser for both people and pets. I sure it is still on my floppy disk somewhere. I was hoping for some sort of plaque placed as a reminder too depending on the level of contribution to the park. This could of been a biodegradable plaque.

the wrong people are running Buffalo for the most part....

If smarter, more knowledgeable people of higher integrity were in charge things would be so different. Not perfect by any means, but much BETTER.

There are so many advantages that are under-used or under-marketed, so many "free" or cheap decisions that could easily be made that, added up, would make an enormous impact on the city and region.

Taxes would still be high, there would still be the "big picture" problems, but we might be closer to finding a way to solve those problems too.

The problem is how do you get in charge in politics with your integrity intact?

How much $$ could be made with a concession stand in Delaware park over on the rose garden/lake side?

Especially on Shakespeare in the Park nights....

What if they had a sort of medieval themed concession stand for the play? They could sell hazelnuts and things like that as snacks. Good $$, healthy, and authentic.

The proceeds could go to the festival.

I think Olmsted contols the concessions at the Marcy Casino, as well.

I'm reading a phenominal book called "Mindful Politics." That seems to be the issue on most people's minds when they consider a run - even if they have ethics, would that change due to pressure, ego, need to succeed (even for the constituents)?

Why wouldn't the proceeds go to the guy making the investment in the cart?

Besides the $200+ Y1, +10% more Y2, +10% more Y3 of a three year contract, from what I've been told, the vendor also provides a percentage of their take to Olmsted.
