    Path smoothed for waterfront road

The long-delayed Southtowns Connector roadway-improvement project - viewed by many as the linchpin to development of Buffalo's outer harbor - is becoming a reality, thanks to an injection of state funding.

The state Department of Transportation announced Thursday that it will provide an additional $9.6 million to jump-start the first phase of the project.

The $32 million first phase of the project, aimed at transforming Fuhrmann Boulevard into a grand waterfront boulevard from the Coast Guard Station to Ohio Street, and creating two new intersections on Route 5, had stalled because of a nearly $10 million funding gap. More than $22 million in federal transportation funds have previously been earmarked for the project.

The state will provide the $4.3 million in matching money required to free up the federal dollars plus $5.3 million to bridge the first-phase funding gap.

People who wonder if the glass is half empty or full miss the point. The glass is refillable.

Great news....now lets hope we get the Skyway demolished and replaced with less intrusive lift bridges.
