Olmsted moves ahead with improvement plan

With $12.6 million raised already during a quiet phase, the Buffalo Olmsted Parks Conservancy is moving ahead with plans to raise another $12.5 million to enhance and maintain the parks system

Conservancy officials announced the fundraising milestone Tuesday at Martin Luther King Jr. Park, which will see $500,000 in improvements.

Originally, the organization had hopes to raise $20 million to fund the 20-year plan. Now the board and campaign committee will likely raise that amount to $25 million and continue the momentum, he said. There is still much work to be done at the parks, including renovations at the lodge buildings at Parkside and in Cazenovia Park, which includes creation of an interactive learning center at Parkside.

In addition to the 20-year plan, funds raised have been used to endow salaries for the zone gardeners, purchasing landscaping equipment and restoring park structures, including the shelter house in MLK Park. All six Olmsted parks, neighboring parkways and circles has benefited from the first phase of fundraising.

Front Park will continue to see improvements and changes, such as the demolition and removal of a vacant brick structure. That and other work at the park were funded by $4 million from the Peace Bridge Authority and the City of Buffalo, announced this past fall.

Some projects planned for the second phase of the campaign include recreating all 29 miles of the pathway in each of the six Olmsted spaces; complete restoration of the Parkside Lodge in Delaware Park for use as a year-round visitor and banquet center; and unearthing the Quarry Garden in Delaware Park.

Founded in the 1970s, the Buffalo Olmsted Parks Conservancy is an independent, nonprofit, membership-based community organization that works to promote, preserve, restore, enhance and maintain Olmsted-designed parks and parkways in the Greater Buffalo area.

including renovations at the lodge buildings at Parkside and in Cazenovia Park,
Didn't they have a BIG fundraiser for "blueprints" for the Cazenovia casino a few years ago. I remember posters all over South Buffalo. I wonder what ever happened to the "blueprint" project???

Does the plan still call for the removal of the ice rink and community center in Caz??? The taxpayers paid MILLIONS to put them in ..and paid MILLIONS to renovate them!!!

I noticed that the Conservancy is attempting to limit foot traffic off the pathways in Delaware Park off Rumsey Road where the shade has made it hard for grass to grow. They've also planted some new trees and have the rose garden looking well-tended (even for the winter). This is a far cry from the Griffin era when the Parks Department would cut down a perfectly healthy tree growing next to a dying one and cart the wood off (presumably for Jimmy or one his relative's fireplaces)!
