I scanned the book in. You can view the scans on flickr.com and look at the higher res photos.CENTRAL location, unusual shipping facilities and cheap power have conspired to give this great city a steady and remarkable growth, and the same elements will surely at no distant day make Buffalo one of the leading cities of America. It is said that within a radius of 500 miles reside two-thirds of the entire population of the United States. As for shipping facilities, on the one hand are the Great Lakes, while on the other the largest railway trunk lines of the country (15 in number) extend in all directions and bring this city within quick and easy reach of a vast multitude of people. Then, two, the Erie Canal
has contributed greatly to the growth and development of Buffalo.
The most powerful natural battery on earth is Niagara-only 20 miles distant-and within the last few years this mighty power has been so harnessed an4 the long distance electric current so developed, that Buffalo now reaps a
tremendous advantage therefrom. The stranger in the city is first impressed by three things; the cleanliness of the town, the asphalt streets, the brilliant lights at night. The first and last are largely the result of Niagara's electric power, thus reducing the consumption of soft coal-such a nuisance in many large cities. The asphalt pavements are the pride of Buffalo, and justly so. There are over 400 miles of this type of street-more then Paris, London, or any other large city can claim.
Buffalo now numbers over 500,000 inhabitants, has 8 theatres, 70 schools, and more than 200 churches. Here are Ellicott Square, The Prudential, Mutual
Buffalo's industries are many and varied-over 4,000 manufacturing institutions employ nearly 200,000 persons. The flour mills, breweries, and ship-building are leading in importance, but there are also immense plants for the manufacture of heavy machinery> mill ,and railroad supplies, sugar-making apparatus, etc.
Buffalo has one of the most efficient street railway services of the country, reaching in all directions-to Niagara Falls, Lockport, and numerous suburban points. No city' in America has a brighter future. Coupled with unusual natural advantages she boasts a population of intelligent, industrious, progressive and cultured citizens ever on the alert to further the interests of the community.

Local writer George Kunz called Shelton Square "Buffalo's Piccadilly Circus," the place in the city where Niagara,
Main, Church, North Division, South Division, and Erie Streets converged. In the center was a "trolley island,"
later known as a bus shelter. See map below for location. At right is the Ellicott Square building.

But, I used to love Shelton Square when I was a kid - that combined with the Liberty Bank Building - my mom used to say "we'll pretend we're in NYC."
