A little slice of Hollywood is coming to Buffalo, and it’s expected to bring along 150 new high-tech jobs.

A total of $4.5 million from the Buffalo Billion will help locate a new company in Buffalo that will provide visual effects for movies and television, Lt. Governor Robert J. Duffy announced this afternoon.

The company, Empire Visual Effects, creates a new niche in the region and will partner with Daemen College, which will receive a portion of that funding to train students to work in the post-production field.

The new studio is being formed by several in the visual effects industry, which is growing because of the large amount of special effects used in today’s Hollywood productions, officials said.

Buffalo was chosen as an ideal location for a variety of factors, including the low cost of operating in the region; the aggressive state tax-credit program being offered to the film industry; and the proximity to the University at Buffalo’s supercomputers, which will allow the studio to develop a high-performance product.
