Work completed on Roswell OR project

Roswell Park Cancer Institute has concluded work on its operating rooms for minimally invasive surgical procedures.

The $3.6 million project involved converting locker room areas into an elaborate center of two ORs outfitted with digital and robotic technology and connected to teleconferencing space.

Surgeons performing minimally invasive procedures make keyhole incisions and use a small telescope attached to a miniature camera and a light source to see inside the patient's body. The surgeon removes the tumor or repairs the area by passing tiny surgical instruments through other small incisions.

Patients are said to have less pain and spend less time recovering than after conventional surgery.

Minimally invasive procedures are common in general surgery and have been performed at most Buffalo-area hospitals for several years. The techniques, however, have been gaining popularity for treatment of many cancers throughout the body, said Dr. Boris Kuvshinoff, surgery director.

The surgical center was designed by consulting engineers Robson Woese Inc., with input of Roswell Park physicians, urses, and facilities planners. Olympus surgical systems and Berchtold Corp. served as the major corporate partners, providing both equipment and technical expertise.

People who wonder if the glass is half empty or full miss the point. The glass is refillable.
