Business First of Buffalo - 12:27 PM EDT Thursday
Construction of the helipad at Women & Children's Hospital of Buffalo has begun with the arrival of steel beams to support the structure.
The helipad will be located six stories up, on top of the building that houses the Pediatric and Neonatal Intensive Care Units.
The $750,000 project was made possible with funding from Sal Alfiero, founder and former chairman of Mark IV Industries.
Construction of the helipad is expected to be ready Nov. 1, said hospital president Cheryl Klass.
Without a helipad, critically sick and injured infants, children and expectant mothers have been flown to Erie County Medical Center and then transferred by ambulance to Women & Children's. The helipad will allow Women & Children's transport teams to begin treating patients on-site and during transport to the hospital, Klass said.

That will be weird to have helicopters landing in a residential neighborhood like that. But if it will save lives it's totally worth it.
I never knew why Children's was located there anyway. I assume they had some land donated to them?? It seems that a big hospital like that should have been right on Delaware instead of tucked away on Bryant next to private homes.
