where did you hear of this?
They are closing their local operations and moving them to Tenn. About 275 will lose their jobs. Local media is afraid to report it, but its happening. Rich is trying to get around having to pay to tear down the soon to be vacant building. Good luck to all those workers trying to land a job around here.
I take this as being nonsense...
maybe they're expanding in Tenn., I doubt they are moving all of their operations. Why would they tear their buildings down on Niagara? They'd sell them for a few million bucks, thus, your rumor has holes in it.
I have a hard time believing that the local media would know about this, yet be "afraid to report it".
Plus, there would be absolutely no reason to tear down the building.
Even the neighboring Curtis Screw building (which is much older and obsolete) was recently sold and is being used by a new owner.
We do need a lttle more in the way of specifics.
Now if we could only get the Buffalo and Erie County governments to follow.Originally posted by Treeguy

Maybe this is what he is talking about...

I saw a story on the very early morning news on Friday am, either WGRZ or WIVB. It sounded to me like Rich was planning to close its facilities here -- but maybe whoever wrote the copy for the tv news didn't get it right, because what was in the Business Journal seems to similar to what they were talking about on the news, too.
I am surprised that a story about 200+ jobs lost by Jan 1 isn't news, but then, that would sort of tarnish Bob Rich's "white hat" image.

is from a guy that works there, and is losing his job by months end. He said the asbestos and other contaminants would make the building useless because of the costs to strip those elements. I was really surprised, he said he saw reporters from various stations at the plant and that he was told wgrz was going to run the story last thursday. They didn't. But he assured me, it was real, it was happening, and I have no reason to doubt the guy. He wasn't happy, he had 19 yrs there. And yes, I believe they won't run the story because of Bob Rich's hometown persona.
The whole company is not closing up and moving out of state, just a division of the company.
the blue collar division. The guys that work in the freezers and on the docks. Agreed.
Sorry to hear about those layoffs. But at least Rich is focusing on growth areas for the Buffalo area. Still, I don't understand why the media isn't mentioning it more. A layoff is a layoff.
From the article:
The Buffalo plant will then focus on "High Tech/High Temp" product manufacturing, which Rich's said fits with the local research and development center. The company said in 2001 it invested $10 million in upgrades for the "High Tech/High Temp" operation.
some related good news:

I knew after Rich and Mindy moved the family to Florida it would be a matter of time before he would move the family buisness to another state. When Rich tried to get pro baseball here Buffalo & Eire County slap him around a few times and old feelings are always remembered....
Its cheaper for Rich to move the company now that his ties here have been gone for about 10 years. Buffalo needs to stop using Rich products as a part of this community it no longer it a part of us and hasn't been for 10 years. Just because the plant is here doesn't mean anything, rich products have been gone long ago.
YEAH...AND ANOTHER ONE BITS THE DUST !!! BOOM, BOOM BOOM ANOTHER ONE BITS THE DUST....

Makes you wonder when all of WNY will wake up and realize that our past is just that. The past.
We keep holding on to the old tired ideas that have not moved us forward at all. We we keep loosing, jobs, tax base and people. Plugging the holes with more taxes will not spur development.
Our leaders are not leaders at all. They are takers! Takers from a community to surplus their own pockets and greed and no forward thinking for all people of our region.
Good Luck Rich products. Maybe those that are let go will find new reasons to stay other than our most generous social service programs.

Bob Rich's "white hat image"? You make him sound like some sort of con artist who is undeserving of his status in this community!
There's something that should be understood here. Bob Rich and his corporation dont owe a damn thing to this city or county. Indeed, it's been their sense of loyalty to this area which has kept them here all these years despite being located in what many prominent businessmen think is the worst area in this country to have a corp headquartered!
When everyone else was leaving, Rich Products stuck it out here and continued to hang their hats in Buffalo.
I am absolutely certain that Rich has been tempted many times in the past to just pack up the trucks and get the heck out here. Away from the high taxes, red tape, high workmens comp costs, unions, state and local laws that crucify a business's bottom line and the politicans who enact them.
And you know what? I wouldn't blame him one dam bit if he left.
Finally, it's not a crime in this country to start and run a successful business and get wealthy in the process. It's called free market capitalism and is one of the cornerstones of our society.
But not here in Buffalo, Erie County and NYState. In this twisted, confused state it's known as free market socialism. In many ways this woebegone state has more in common with a country like China than the USA.
Bob Rich doesn't owe this area a damn thing!
Thank you New York, may I please have another!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
