Kaleida Health and the Buffalo Public Schools will mark the beginning of a year-long partnership today when nurses from the health system begin work in 68 public and Catholic schools located in the city.

Under a $1.2 million contract with the school district, the health system will supply a dozen R.N.s, 16 licensed practical nurses and a pair of medical assistants to provide school-based care on a part-time basis for the 2005-2006 academic year. The contract covers health services at 50 public schools and 18 Catholic schools.

The arrangement with Kaleida involves personnel from Women & Children's Hospital of Buffalo and the Visiting Nursing Association of Western New York. Nursing coverage will be offered up to four hours daily, said Melva Visher, director of school health at Women & Children's.

"There will be a health provider for each building every day," Visher said.

Kaleida also operates 11 school-based health clinics in Buffalo and is expected to add four others by the end of the year, Visher said.
