    $100K and up club

How many times have you seen this statement repeated?

"For every dollar in state support it receives, SUNY campuses return $6 to $8 to their respective communities."

How many of these dollars actually came back to Buffalo?

    Well ...

You can't just expect or even demand people to live in the City. The city has a responsibility to compete and give these people an incentive to WANT to live there.

The City has spent decades catering to the exact type of person it desires. They have never met a low-income or public housing project they didn't like.

If they had any type of vision they would have been building $250,000 condo's on the waterfront and taxing them $6,500 a year instead of low-income housing! If they did they'd be whining how all there tax money goes to the suburbs instead of whining they don't get enough!

Since the larger of the two campuses is located in Amherst, I can't see a problem with 50% of them living in Amherst as well.

Also, it seems to me that most members of the "100k club" like the population in general, would rather NOT live in Buffalo. I don't live in Buffalo, and I really can't fault their choice not to either...

Yes there is the old adage you reap what you sow,
NY wants to give everything away, have the most generous pension system the most civil service workers ....well then that's what we have.

Too bad they do not have the foresight to see the long term consequences of their decisions.

You are very correct on buffalo, but much of the problem has been the flight of the middle class tax base from the city. The only way out of these messes is to make things attractive for people to move and invest into a particular area.

Obviously, the University Heights Answer Lady is of the opinion that the only "community" that counts is the city of Buffalo. FYI for her, and for those others who share her warped vision, 'SUNY' stands for "State University of New York" ... doh.

Thanks, Lefty. I just needed to take a break from some of the nastiness that was going on here for a while.

THERE ARE many activists....and preservationists who think that their neighborhood is the best and the only one that counts..I guess you cant blame them for trying to improve their neighborhoods. You must look at the bigger picture tho...how does their "needs" impact the entire city?? Tim
Tielman has been a self proclaimed preservation czar and has torpedoed many a good proposal because it didnt meet his interpretation (perfect recent example ..Canal Side project)...and found support thru loyalty...and because of this,Buffalo has suffered..and many developers dont even bother anymore because of ths litigational costs associated with this.
SADLY..many neighborhoods sit in a time warp and will..until someone emerges with a vision and the clout to rise above the NIMBY crowds!

I think the University Heights Answer Lady demonstrates an incredibly selfish and self-centered attitude that seems endemic in Erie County, especially among many in the city of Buffalo, that goes far beyond ordinary parochialism. It's as if every institution or every project in Erie County WNY should be judged only on what it does for the City of Buffalo. It's why regionalism in Erie County will never be successful; too many equate "regionalism" with benefitting Buffalo at the expense of the rest of the county. Guess what, folks: 50 jobs moving from a suburb into downtown Buffalo is NOT a gain of 50 jobs for the area.

Tielman also demonstrates selfishness and self-centeredness, but it's less parochial in its basis and more about wielding power. It is just as destructive and detrimental to the area, however. Plain and simple, projects in the COB will be done Tielman's way or he'll litigate them to death. He has enough supporters with deep pockets to do it. Generally, I'm in favor of historic preservation, but Tielman's "my way or the highway" attitude is really simply obstructionist. You cannot save every old building, and you cannot make the city into a museum.
