    New local arts foundation announced

Today, family and friends of Neil Garvey, the popular actor, lawyer and theater supporter who died in February, announced the establishment of a new foundation in his name. The Neil E. Garvey Foundation for the Arts, will raise money for local theater companies and other arts organizations and help to spread the word about the work they do.

Why is it a good thing? It looks like they have the goal of raising money..meaning they do not have money right now. All this is, IMO, is another non-profit group that will look for grants and pay for staff.

Why couldn't they partner with another org and remove the overhead?

I am assuming they are being pro-active with fund raising with people donating by choice. Or am i missing something?

Once created, according to WNY logic, it needs to live on. Fast forward 5 years and this group now has an executive director, staff and the fundraising is not what it used to be. Hand goes out for public grants....

I know... but you gotta have faith... Maybe they will target the people in the private sector who enjoy that type of stuff and not apply for any and all grants.

Are you suggesting that there is a company in the private sector that has not already been hit up for money? Not trying to be a jerk.. Just making an observation.

I think it's great to do things like this but they should have an exit plan. Hold a couple of events, raise a bunch of money and then do something special.

They all get hit up for money. I just thought if the group is trying to be pro-active and raise money versus taking money from the tax payers it would be a good thing. THink about it, Mark Poloncarz and Alan Bedenko wouldn't have anyone to pander to if the groups were self supportive.

ONe thing I think is not productive is when you have multiple non-profits in an area all doing the same things. Sounds like layers of government that are redundant.
