    Assessments Again?

I heard that Cheektowaga is going to do assessments again. Can anyone confirm or deny this? For me it would be 3 assessments in about 6 years.

Actually, a realistic reassessment could work to your advantage this time.

It would be awesome, but, no other assessment has ever worked to my advantage as of yet.

They have assessed our house for more than we can sell it for.

We stay because we like the school distict. I have looked into moving, my house is so incredibly cheap to heat, I can't afford to move.

Technically, towns/cities are supposed to update their assessment rolls every year. I understand the idea is to make sure everyone pays his/her full tax load. Seems like a rip off to me, though, particularly because the majority of the load always falls on homeowners, as opposed to businesses.

I don't mind paying my fair share. I seem to get assessed every 2 years. It was the last assessment that put us over the top. What bothers me the most is that not every citizen's assessment was increased or even looked at. That's not fair and that is not equitable. My next door neighbor has the same exact house as I, he pays half of what I pay.

That's terrible. Are you going to challenge it? Sometimes that works, particularly if you have a comparable so close by.

I did. I didn't rat on my neighbor, but I may. He's been such a knucklehead the last year I'm tempted to.
The town goes by what like homes sold for. Since he is the original owner, no one has been in his raised ranch to see that he has 4 bedrooms instead of 2. I'm the third owner of my house.

I don't see that as ratting anyone out. Your neighbor is cheating, and you're paying the price of that.

The thing about assessments, though, is that they aren't responsible for your tax increases. Higher spending is. If your town and school district actually cut spending --- har har -- your higher assessment wouldn't necessarily mean a thing.

This might be the year for you to challenge your assessment, though. With the economy as it is, I figure we're all in for some huge property tax increases, particularly at the school district level.

Well, if you're paying NY taxes, you're taking crap from someone.
