Sabres owner to spruce up city's Canalside land

    now this is cool...

Sabres owner to spruce up city's Canalside land

Buffalo Sabres owner Terry Pegula is offering to spruce up a section of the city's waterfront on his own dime.
Pegula wants to donate landscaping work for unfinished lots around the Central Wharf section of Canalside, according to a city memo.

The donation -- worth up to an estimated $120,000 -- would cover new sod and other landscaping amenities and improvements to city-owned lots, as well as the cost of labor.

Mayor Byron W. Brown has scheduled a 1 p.m. press conference to talk about the donation.
Why a press conference? Why not just say "Thank You" and not stand in the guys way to get the work completed.

How would Brown take credit for it without a press conference?

All sarcasm aside - the Mayor is just doing what Politicians do!

There actually are legal issues that have to be considered and then who pays to maintain these new green spaces. Now some people will cry and say the Mayors buddy got a tax write and we(tax payers) get stuck with the cost of maintenance. Believe it or not - you cant just go out and do things without involving lawyers - and the lawyers have made sure of that.

I bet the Sabres had their attorney's make sure it was done in a way that doesn't impact them. They're basically paying the city to take care of city property. So the long term maintenance to taxpayers isn't any more that it would be anyway if the city was doing it's job all along.

Now it would be nice too if the Sabres spruced up their own Arena one of these days.... Signage? Lighting?

They should just name the arena something permanent . The Aud's name wasn't resold every few years.

Just name it "The Buffalo Arena"... etc..

If I was rich enough to name the arena I would run a contest and let the community decided. It also would not be named after a business in the area. Something more on the order of how the old aud was named... Once named that is the name until it is finally torn down. tradition. "I remember seeing Ozzy at the Aud".... or I remember seeing "whoever" at "What is is called now?

I wonder what the payroll is for the official podium carrier. If I was mayor the podium wouldn't follow me around...

I agree. the Mayor should dump the podium. It is unbecoming of the CEO of a city. Instead he should get a neat looking hat.

If I had a choice I think the hat takes the best interest of our community. You wouldn't have to hire a "hat" carrier and vehicle to bring it to events. I see the microphones though... I suppose you need a place to put them. How many microphones do you really need anyways? Looks like 6 of them. Who were the other men?
