    Drug Dealing on Lake Erie

Instead of streetcorners, the dealers are peddling in the middle of where else?
    Lake Erie.
Interesting story with Buffalo (Tonawanda) connection.
As usual,I had to go outside the American media to get the full story.

A boat chase across Lake Erie ended Wednesday with the arrests of three men and one of Niagara's largest-ever seizures of cash.

Police seized more than $1 million in U. S. currency after two of the men were nabbed when they came ashore at Crystal Beach.

The money -- $1,077,000 -- had been vacuum-sealed in clear plastic and stuffed into several duffel bags.

"That's a lot of money, the most I've ever seen," acting Insp. Brian Richardson of Niagara Regional Police said Thursday.

Police also seized a twin-engine cigarette-style power boat worth an estimated $350,000. The 10-metre boat wasn't involved in Wednesday's pursuit.

Richardson said the arrests followed an investigation launched by the NRP about three months ago.

"They had information criminal activity was taking place in the middle of Lake Erie," he said.

NRP investigators notified U. S. officials that a boat suspected of being involved in criminal activity had entered American waters Wednesday morning.

    U. S. Border Patrol officers in a boat ordered the vessel to stop, but it turned around and headed for the Canadian shore, police said.
Two men carrying several duffel bags fled the boat at a public boat launch at Crystal Beach and were arrested by the provincial biker enforcement unit.

The boat's driver headed back to the American side with the U. S. Border Patrol in pursuit.
Gilbert Judd, of Tonawanda, N. Y., was arrested by U. S. officials and charged for failing to stop for authorities. Police seized the boat.

A subsequent search led to the seizure by American police of nearly half a kilogram of marijuana and $38,000 US cash.
The two men arrested in Crystal Beach have been identified as Bryson Villeneuve, 26, and Robert Hough, 28, both of Cornwall.
Several law enforcement groups were involved in the bust, including NRP, central region detective services Unit, the provincial biker enforcement unit, the integrated proceeds of crime unit and the border enforcement safety task force, which includes members from the Canada Border Service Agency and U. S. Customs.

Oh this is just great. Pretty soon they'll be harrassing everyone on the water who just wants to relax with a few beers, smoke a little weed, and enjoy racing around in their boat.

Free people arent safe anywhere anymore!

    pffft......

I was harassed by the boarder patrol, the same day, for having a "huge package" on me.

Apparently, they thought I was concealing the "banana" boat they were looking for in my pants.

Those arrested sound like nothing more than low-level mules. The upper-echelon in an organized criminal enterprise are seldom involved in the dirty business of transportation.

$1.7 million has been forfeited to the authorities, and that usually doesn't sit well with those atop the food chain.

If and when they make bail, the mules had better disappear and take their families with them.

From a historical standpoint, the Niagara River is rich in the trade of illicit goods. During Prohibition, the Runrunners would weight their casks of liquor with rock salt. When the Feds would give chase, they'd toss the casks overboard, hopefully to be picked up at a later date when the salt disintegrated and the casks popped to the surface.

I've seen them being chain-sawed open at the USCG station along the Intracoastal near Pompano! They actually hide the drugs inside the fiberglass hull!
