Palin inspires women to vote for Democrats September 04, 2008

MOST US women are unimpressed by Republican John McCain's choice of Alaska Governor Sarah Palin as his running mate, and have thrown their weight behind the Democratic ticket in the race for the White House, a national poll showed today.

Six in 10 women voters see McCain's choice of a female running mate as a calculated political decision rather than one based on Palin's experience and qualities, the poll conducted by the Garin-Hart-Yang Research Group showed.

“Women voters see the choice of Governor Palin as being driven by politics rather than by any sense of conviction on Senator McCain's part that she has the experience and qualities to make a good vice-president,” the research group said in a statement.

A majority of the 800 women polled - 56 per cent - said they were put off by Palin's legislative record and her position on moral issues, such as abortion.

“When women voters learn that Palin opposes abortion even in cases of rape and incest, opposes stem cell research and, as governor, opposed funding for state pre-kindergarten programs... a majority say... (they) feel less favourable toward her,” the poll showed.

Palin's scant experience as an elected official - she was mayor of a small town for six years and has been governor of Alaska for less than two - “squanders” McCain's advantage over Democratic presidential candidate Barack Obama in terms of experience in office and readiness to lead, the women voters said.

And even though the choice of Palin was a historic move for the Republican party, marking the first time a woman has featured on a Republican presidential ticket, it has pushed many women voters over to the side of the Democrats.

Fifty-two per cent of women voters polled said they would vote for the all-male Democratic ticket of Obama and Joe Biden, while just 41 per cent said they would back McCain and Palin in the November election.

This shows that you have no clue about the Democrats or Liberals.

I'm always baffled at Rush Limbaugh, Sean Hannity whenever they refer to the democrats or liberals as 'scared' or 'in panic mode' or 'scrambling'. It's such a joke. Saying things like this just make Republicans look worse.

You're acting as though Democrats are just brainless people running around like chickens with their heads cut off, and just want power for power's sake. And wow, something interesting happens that the republicans like, means that the democrats must be 'scared' or 'scrambling' for something new to get voters?

Democrats have a set of ideals just like the Republicans do. Rush Limbaugh, Sean Hannity, etc. try to tell you they don't. It's such a lie.

Democrats didn't like Hillary for just being a woman. They liked Hillary for what she stood for (in their minds). Republicans thought wrong when choosing Palin.

Of course, you'll get unpolitical people on both sides come election time. Some women will vote for the McCain-Palin ticket just because there is a woman on the ticket, and some blacks will vote for the Obama-Biden ticket just because there is a black on the ticket.

I'm an independent who wishes that politics could be less about what team you're on and more about what the people actually would do.

Somehow, the Republicans think that is actually true.

Speaking from an independent's point of view, I find this laughable. The only thing Palin has going for her over Obama is that she served as a Governor. Which by the way, is 47/50 (population wise) and doesn't operate the same as any other state with regards to budgeting and taxes. People in Alaska get money back from Alaska instead of pay state income taxes. She was a small-town mayor who RAISED taxes (sales tax from 2% to 2.5% to pay for a new sports complex). She graduated college with a journalist degree and was a news reporter for 2 years.

But, Obama has experience as a State Senator in Illinois for 8 years, as a United States Senator for 4 years, he graduated from both Columbia University and Harvard, was president of the 'Harvard Law Review', gave hundreds of speeches, practiced law, was a professor teaching law at Harvard for 4 years, was on the board of directors at many organizations, and has been campaigning for almost 2 years now.

Obama seems to have much more experience. The republicans are somehow saying that almost 2 years as governor with nothing much in her life trumps all of Obama's experience is just laughable.

Yes, Obama's experience pales in comparison to John McCain. There is no doubt. If you fought about John McCain having more experience than Barrack Obama, I would agree.... but if you can't agree that Palin is by far less experienced, then other arguments you make lose credibility.
