    good campground

Does anybody know of any good campgrounds for tent camping in near chautauqua lake, or Alegany region?

Tent camping with one wife (pregnant) 2 children and 2 dogs.

I know I am not going to get any rest whatsoever.

I also would have posted this on the tourism board but am leaving on Thursday and am hoping for some speedy replies.

    Thank you

    Jim Albert.

Allegheny State Park has decent camping, and its about 30-40 minutes from Chautauqua.

I second the Allegheny State Park. The campground in Red House is very kid friendly. There are 2 campgrounds in Quaker. I don't remember them as being so great for little kids. There are tons of things to do in the park too. It takes me less than an hour from home in North Cheektowaga to the check in.

Thank you for your input, My wife has just informed me that there will be no tenting,, only a cabin, needs access to bathroom and a mattress.
I assume there are cabins at these places?

    Thanks again.

It's kind of late to get a cabin at Allegany, but you can give it a try. If you can get one at Red House, that's probably best. Anderson Trail has older cabins and is closer to the admin building. Beehunter has many newer cabins (no steps), nice modern bathroom/showers, and there's a short trail that cuts through the woods to the playground/beach/tennis courts, etc. Except for a few handicapped-accessible cabins, none of the Allegany cabins have in-cabin bathrooms.

There are a lot of "cottages for rent" signs up around Chautauqua Lake. They're pricier than the Allegany cabins, but they have a lot more creature comforts. Check this site: http://allwny.com/chautauqua_lake_lodging.html

There's also High Banks Campground on the Allegany Reservoir. This is close to Allegany SP, the Allegheny National Forest and Chautauqua Lake. http://www.highbankscamping.com/HBC_Reservations.asp

With her being pregnant, I'd suggest somewhere with room service and a spa.

This weather sucks. One of the worst summers that I can remember as of late---haven't been able to do much of anything outside!

    Chautauqua Gorge!!

Head into Mayville, then just past the High School is hanum Rd. Turn there and follow it to the end.

There are shelters and grills on top or you can hike down into the gorge where there's phenominal tent camping.

My friends and I started camping there when we were 12!!
