Should Erie County cut 6 Legislature seats?

According to an article in the Buffalo News (7-19-2008) Section D page 1.
Michael Ranzenhofer (R) Amherst stated "The Legislature needs fewer and more qualified legislators."

Less is a good idea. Looking at how the voting public has voted in the past. I don't think they will ever be able to figure out who is qualified.

Well Razenhofer got elected to a higher office, why not eliminate his seat? This way he'd be putting actions behind his words.

Alone Mr. Ranzenhofer (R) Amherst cannot remove his seat. His noble idea needs the support of the rest of the Eire County Legislators. I doubt that he will have much support due to the fact that most of the legislators are only interested in voting on what is good for them not whats good for the county taxpayers.

The county legislature needs to be pared down, commensurate with the smaller population.

Since we hire them, why can't we fire them?

Currently there are only two ways to amend the County Charter to reduce the number of legislative districts:

    1) a local law to amend the County Charter passed by the legislature and approved at a mandatory referendum; and

    2) Through a Charter Review Commission ( the voters are asked every ten years if one should be convened under that latest amendments to the County Charter) and the attendant legislative procedure and approved at a mandatory referendum.

Yes they should and then test the ones left to see if they have at least a high school education. They are like 2 year olds fighting over a game!

They should have to have a once a year vote of confidence from the people of the county. If a no vote they get replaced!
Even Dictators have to respect the will of the pawns, for without their obedience, they have no power at all!

When was the last time voters were asked? And how are they asked? Mailings? Notices in the Snooze? Or do "they" ask some entity such as the Partnership?

Wouldn't it be great if they had to give US a reason why all this government is needed?

Simply it is needed to give people a job.

To see the process and such of the Carter Review Commission you can check out the old website that is still up at: http://www.eriecharterreview.org/

One of the amendments that was approved as part of this process is that the voters are asked directly whether or not a Charter Review Commission should be convened. In the past we had to wait until the legislature convened one.

The voters were not asked previously, they will be asked for the first time I believe in 2016 because the voters approved the new Charter in November 2006.
