So is everyone getting thier tomato ready for the summer?

Instead of following the possible "blood on the 190" story tonight I decided to get my Tomato Success Kit ready for the summer.

    This thing really paid off.

I let it sit over the winter in the garage with the soil still in it.

I dumped the old dirt into my 45 gallon soil storage garbage can and cleaned the pieces.

The insert sits in the bottom part and separates the soil from the water underneath.

This year I'm going to try Happy Frog Potting Soil. I'm going to mix it 50/50 with the old soil from last year. I'm not going to mix any dry fertilizer in the soil because I'll constantly feed the plants with General Hydroponics fertilizer 3 part mix.

First thing I did was make sure the soil was packed into the bottom of the unit.

This will make sure the water and nutrients wick up from the bottom.

I then mixed about 50% of the oil soil with the new Happy Frog and filled it within an 1" of the top. You pat it down but you don't want to compress it too much.

I then picked the two healthiest out of the group.

Here are the baby pictures of these two. Both are grape type tomatoes.

In this case I wanted to plant the tomatoes as deep as I could.

    Tomato Success Kit

Made two holes about the size of the pots so that the stems of the plants would go beneath the surface to root.

You can see where the side stems are actually past the soil surface.

I pinch the lower stems off each plant. Tomatoes will acutally side root from the stem. The better the root system the healthier the plant will be.

I then just top filled in the plants and we are ready to go.

I'll put in another 1/2" of soil in tomarrow.

You fill the bottom of the container from the side. Once I know they are starting to take I'll start to mix the nutrients in with thier water.

    This stuff is great.
