Artpark books some big names for summer season

LEWISTON — More hands-on art, more big name music groups, more variety, as well as more sponsors are planned for Artpark’s 2008 summer season.

With the help of sponsors, close to $1 million will be invested in the 21 free outdoor concerts on Tuesdays and Wednesdays. Top names such as Trisha Yearwood, Michael McDonald, Kansas, Bret Michaels and Three Dog Night will be featured this summer, Artpark announced Wednesday during a press conference at the Barton Hill Hotel.

In addition to free concerts on Tuesdays and Wednesdays, Artpark also will bring Broadway to Lewiston with the musical production of Disney’s “Beauty and the Beast” on the indoor mainstage.

Artpark President George Osborne said park officials want Artpark to be the top area entertainment destination, noting that last year, the park had 220,000 visitors, a 128 percent increase since 2002.

“All venues [which also offer free concerts] and the casinos are bidding for these top acts, but I like to think that they chose Artpark because of the view, standing on the stage overlooking the gorge,” Osborne said.

Christopher Brown, chairman of the Artpark and Company board said, “Overall this is the strongest lineup we’ve had on Tuesdays and the quality of Wednesdays blow me away, it really has been ratcheted up. Artpark’s mission is not just the concerts, but they are really popular and have been great vehicles to offer other programs.”

Janice Winslow, who is director of parks programs, has brought a new sculpture contest to Artpark and regular artist demonstrations.

“We’re thrilled at the community aspect, bringing families into the park and teaching art, making Artpark what it once was,” Winslow said.
First Niagara Tuesdays in the Park will run from June 3 to Aug. 26, and remains the top night for free concerts and national acts.

Plenty of ladies are expected to line up early for the first show, when Michaels, the former leader of the ’80s rock band Poison, and star of VH1’s reality show “Rock of Love,” takes the stage.

    The rest of the lineup:
June 10 — Three-time Grammy winning country music superstar Trisha Yearwood.
June 17 — Three Dog Night. June 24 — America.
July 1 — As part of Canada Day festivities, Toronto’s David Clayton-Thomas, formerly of Blood, Sweat and Tears.
    July 8 — Kansas. July 15 — Blue Rodeo, Canada’s eight-time Juno award winners.
July 22 — Michael McDonald, an eight-time Grammy award winner and former frontman for the Doobie Brothers.
    July 29 — Gov’t Mule.
Aug. 5 — Former Allman Brothers Band member Dickey Betts and his four-piece band, Great Southern.
Aug. 12 — Leahy, an all brother sister band featured in Artpark’s Celtic Night.
Aug. 19 — Joe Bonamass, a blues rock guitar virtuoso.
Aug. 26 — Funk group War.

The concerts begin at 6:30 p. m. at the park, 450 S. Fourth St., and parking costs $6. No food is allowed to be brought in, but is available for sale. Concerts will continue every Wednesday night and target a younger audience. They also will feature nationally known names and a new parquet dance floor.

Wednesdays are sponsored by HSBC Bank and feature:
    July 9 — Moe. July 16 — Cajun Festival.
July 23 — Cherry Poppin’ Daddies.
July 30 — Sam Roberts Band.
Aug. 7 — Walter Trout with Watermelon Slim.
Aug. 13 — Kim Mitchell. Aug. 20 — Donna the Buffalo.
    Aug. 27 — Sass Jordan.
