The land of the free (if you have a permit)

This is supposed to be the land of the free but you can't have crayfish without a permit from the government. Also the idea that these crayfish are going to escape and thrive in the desert is bordering on insanity. What is next are we going to force people to get a permit for their gerbils because they might escape, what about birds, lizards, worms, spiders, fish?

You left out some pretty important information - like the fact that the species he had (numbering in the 1000s) are not native to the US and that "... the crawfish themselves are not inherently dangerous, but they could wipe out some native fish species if they were to escape into the wild and thrive." It's already happened numerous times where native wildlife, birds, or fish have been wiped out or ended up on the endangered species list because of situations like this one. Futhermore, they DID to try to work with him but he refused to cooperate or make the changes needed to protect the local native fish species. He brought it on himself.

Have you ever heard of the phrase "Survival of the fittest" and the idea of natural selection? Or do you think that humans should use all their time and resources to save every plant, animal, insect, and fungus that is currently on the face of the planet?

I will tell you a little secret long before humans were on this planet animal species went extinct and long after humans are gone from this planet species will still go extinct and nothing you, I, or every human on this planet does will change that fact.

Your post suggest that releasing non-native animals in to a area is a bad thing. One example that denounces that idea is the release of pigs by Columbus in the Western Hemisphere. Before the 1500's there were no pigs in the Americas and by Columbus releasing those pigs he provided a food source for countless people and certainly saved people from starvation.

The thing I was pointing out in my original post was that the government was telling this man he could not own crayfish and raise them as part of his business. He was not harming anyone and still he had government thugs invade his private property and destroy his justly acquired property.

This guy's farm and business fall outside the natural realm of your "survival of the fittest" rationale. Those events of extinction happened through natural evolution and selection, not with human intervention such as would be the case here. Their accidental introduction to this ecosystem would be solely an act of man, not one intended by nature.

A perfect example is what's happening in the west with the dwindling and collapse of the salmon runs - the direct result of the action of man building dams and overfishing with no thought to the future and possible consequences.

All this guy had to do to retain his right to farm them and maintain his business was put in some safeguards to limit the risk of an accidental release. Instead, he chose to adopt an air of self-righteous entitlement, thumbed his nose at science, natural history, and even just plain common sense. His attitude was one of selfish irresponsibility to the negative consequences that may ensue. He left them with no choice. Had they not stepped in and they DID get into the ecosystem destroying God knows what, people would be screaming to know WHY the government didn't step in to protect the rights of the many (them) over the rights of the one (him).
